Art & Life with Rebecca Rivera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Rivera.

Rebecca, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up very involved in the arts. Singing, dancing and performing in musical theatre as a kid. At around 12 years old, my mother bought me my first fashion magazine. I was hooked! My love for fashion combined with my background in the theatre leads me to major in Costume Design, followed by my move to New York where I earned a degree in Fashion Design.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I own a sustainable clothing brand called IRISHLATINA. I use post-consumer products, like secondhand t-shirts, to make new pieces like bomber jackets, overalls, and dresses. By using secondhand clothing as fabric, I strive to keep clothing out of the landfill, while simultaneously creating something new and beautiful. The world has a huge textile waste problem. We consume fast fashion like we consume fast food. The issue with that is, textiles take years to decompose in a landfill. The mission of IRISHLATINA is to keep some of this textile waste out of the ground by transforming it into desirable items once again.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Where there is a will, there is a way. Seriously. Write that on a post-it note, and stick it on your wall. Then put on the Rocky theme song (or Katy Perry if you’re me), and run around your apartment with your hands in the air. This might seem silly, or like I’m not giving you specific, helpful advice, but the point is this… Everyone’s financial struggles are different, they are specific to their own situation. There are so many ways to get money. What matters most is how badly you want it. Where there is a will, there is a way.
