Today we’d like to introduce you to Raina Poré.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I come from a very artistic family. It runs deeply in our genes. Singing & Culinary Arts are my passions and purpose. I began my career as a vocalist in the group “Love Dollhouse” when I was only 16 years old. By the age of 18, I had already signed two major record deals: Universal SRC/All Def Digital and Capitol Records. Like the majority of groups, we disbanded and decided to pursue our careers separately. Through the connections, I made during my time in the group I was able to build my Celebrity clientele list rather quickly. I went from not only being a solo artist but a personal chef to the stars. My first booking was to cater a Christmas party. The client was a prestigious Entertainment Lawyer who I’ve now been working with for three years. I have since then expanded my business and provide full-service catering, family meals, personal meal prep, and classes.
Has it been a smooth road?
I believe that without struggle you cannot grow, and you cannot fully appreciate your success without being humbled by lessons and hardships. Once I was no longer in “Love Dollhouse” I went through a very dark time and made a plethora of sacrifices. I returned to my hometown in Detroit to reestablish myself. I began working at a local restaurant as a waitress and hostess. I loved working at a restaurant but hated my job. Cooking became my therapy. It was my coping mechanism. I enjoyed cooking for my family and friends, but I knew that if I wanted to grow I had to be among competition. I purchased a one-way plane ticket, packed my bags, and said my goodbyes all with only $500 and God’s protection.
When I arrived in LA, I was working odd jobs here and there and doing the typical couch surfing with friends. At one moment, I had nowhere to stay. I used a rental car to get around and in case I needed somewhere to stay. I began catering for artists’ studio sessions. I was able to be in one of my favorite environments while sharing my culinary talents. I decided I would not take no for an answer, and I made people love me and my food. I would show up, then show out and leave them begging for more.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a Full-Service Personal Chef. I am known for my Tapa-style approach and small-bites. Using only fresh ingredients, I use interesting and original recipes. I am most proud of my caliber of work without a formal culinary education. Working with people like Diane Von Furstenberg, Swae Lee, Sonny Digital, & G-Eazy has made my business mostly referral based. I continue to further my culinary skills by reading, doing workshops, and observing the greats.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. I moved here because I wanted to emerge myself into the competition. Los Angeles is considerably expensive so I recommend having a plan to earn a living while pursuing your career.
