Meet Nanette Bonilla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nanette Bonilla.

Nanette, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my in home business in 2012 as Custom Creations. After having my youngest son I knew I wanted to be home with my three kids and started taking small orders for home decor and wood signs. I’ve always been a crafter a maker so when I was invited by a friend to have a booth at a local teacher conference event I went all in created a business name, Facebook page, and wood products for seasonal decor to sale at this event.

From that point, I continued to get custom orders and later participated in the Local 1st Friday art walk downtown. There, I was discovered by a local event coordinator who seemed intrigued with my work and I stumbled into the wedding industry by participating in stylized shoots where I was able to feature my work and expand my skills in woodwork and lettering to create unique detail pieces. Fast forward seven years forward in 2018, I rebranded my business as Nanette Art + Design, My products have grown with my business providing large backdrops, stage installations, wood art and visual arts that include murals throughout Bakersfield. My work has been featured in several online magazines including Martha Stewart Weddings. Today I am honored to know and work with so many local vendors and small business owners both in wedding industry and art culture creative community here in my home town. It is my hope that I could continue as a Visionary and creator living out my passion as I serve others.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road by any means I think roadblocks and struggles are part of the journey of anything new, developing or growing. 1st juggling the family life and business at home has its own struggles and rewards. There will always be distractions as a mom in their environment that surrounds them. The house, the children, the husband. Also as the business grows there are always the growing pains of workspace, storage and of course all the fun legit business matters. It is my goal to always evolve with the changes of each season in life.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Nanette Art and Design specializes in custom and personalized details for events, installations, and custom orders. I am known for my backdrops and art, woodwork and creating unique décor pieces for homes, events, individuals, and businesses. I am proud to have been established and evolved over the last seven years as a woman business owner, a mompreneur at that! its an empowering feeling to know I am able to live out my passion of creating, helping others and all the while available to my families needs. My services are personalized per client and as a visionary I can bring ideas to life, there is such a wide spectrum of work I manage and believe that in itself makes my business unique.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have to say one of my proudest moments has been to have my work featured in Martha Stewert weddings. I’ve always been such a huge fan and inspired by her many talents. But really any time I am faced with a challenge and accomplish it… so proud, every time.
