Story & Lesson Highlights with Sean Bitting of Los Angeles

Sean Bitting shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Sean, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
Lately, this is something I’ve thought about a lot. I have been chasing my dream in what feels like a rollercoaster of a ride; plenty of ups, downs, twist and turns all at break neck speeds. Some days I feel close to a break through and then other days I feel as if I’m being completely delusional, but to stop now would be a complete disservice to everything I’ve worked on all these years. I cannot imagine what stopping looks like at this point.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey whats up,

my name is Sean but you might know me by my stage name BLKGLFNKS (Black Galifianakis). I’m originally from New York and have been in love with making music and expressing myself through the arts since a youngling. I feel like I could write a whole thesis on what makes me and my music so unique and special but to be perfectly honest, my love for music lets me be free to express myself, helping me create a very interesting sound that I believe is pretty refreshing to the ears.

It’s a blend of all things in pop culture I’ve been influenced by from A Tribe Called Quest, to anime and movies to Kendrick to Toro Y Moi; it’s always evolving and changing all in it’s own little microcosm of madness, It’s definitely a vibe.

My hope would be to inspire people who are like me, who want to chase a dream and make it a reality, be a voice for someone who’s still trying to find theirs. At the time of writing this, I’ve release my first ever music video (check out ABT U on Youtube right now) and I’m working on releasing my first full project titled “BLK.” I feel it’s long overdue and it’s exciting, can’t wait for folks to hear it.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I used to be such a quiet, reserved kid, always to myself, a complete contrast to who I am today and just happy to have a toy in my hand lol. It wasn’t until life came at me insanely fast did I start to shed that and be more of the person I am today. I’ve kinda always wanted to go a bit against the grains and wondered a lot, I guess I was fortunate enough to not be told who to be in this wild, wacky world.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There were so many times where I wanted to give up, even now, there’s some days where I would think “life would be way easier if I just stopped, got a simple job, tied the knot and just follow the herd” but there’s one specific time that just felt like it was truly it. I was having a rough day at work, feeling defeated in my quest to making music, scrolling social media (as one does when their in a bad mood) and I kept seeing post like “top 10 reasons music artiist quit” and “How these artist made it.” This was before the algorithm was just shoveling in the same 5 post but I digress, after seeing those post, I just quietly told myself “I’m done.”

Fast forward to a few hours later, my roommate and I head out to a bar in K-Town and we’re chilling and he says “That dude looks like Will. I. Am” come to find out, it was Will. I. Am! He’s at the bar for West Coast legend Rass Kass’s birthday, we all end up freestyling with him in this bar and it’s honestly that moment where I knew that I was designed for making music.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I personally protect at all cost is treat people how you want to be treated. It honestly makes things wayyy easier. It’s been a part of my DNA since I was young.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I honestly hope people just speak of all the good times we’ve had, Each person I’ve interacted with, I would hope they have their own story but anyone hearing it would be able to go “yeah, that was definitely Sean.” I hope people can laugh and enjoy the good times we all had.
