Story & Lesson Highlights with Roxanne Hunt of Los Angeles

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Roxanne Hunt. Check out our conversation below.

Roxanne, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
“True joy” is often equated to being the same thing as an unprecedented explosive moment of excitement…In my estimation, as I experience more and more of life here are my thoughts. Yes, those explosive events like a dream vacation, an engagement or marriage and even winning the lottery are certainly moments of deep happiness and joy. What I see now is that the everyday happenings that many people may say are mundane and every day can actually carry just as much joy if you allow it. Honestly for me, witnessing a gorgeous sunset, sipping what seems in the moment to be the best coffee I have ever had, seeing the sweetest little dog expressing affection and happiness, having a monarch butterfly fly close my my face and hovering there for a few seconds are all examples of what brings me true joy. These types of things happen every single day and are there for all of us to experience and appreciate…if we are looking for them and aware.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Roxanne Hunt here. I am entrepreneurial and run several different businesses I love. The one I want to focus on here is my wedding business – Weddings by Roxanne Hunt. I am an officiant that is truly passionate about bringing wedding ceremonies to life in a way that is truly customized, heartfelt and laced with creativity, personalized details and always a touch of fun. My goal is to interrupt the pattern of template weddings and offer something unique, stylized, one of a kind and memorable.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child, I always felt loved and appreciated. My mother encouraged me by supporting my dreams but somehow in the mix I ended up feeling that although I was aware I could choose to do and be anything I wanted, I didn’t feel it was “appropriate” to shine my light fully. Not sure where I picked up the notion that I had to dim myself and not be too bold or bright. I have since learned along the way that it is our birthright and truly our gift and joy to shine as brightly as possible who we truly are and to accept and understand fully that it is our birthright and reason for existence – to shine and develop these talents, gifts and desires as brightly as possible. And when we do, not only does it fill our own soul with joy and satisfaction, it inspires and encourages others to do the same. Living out loud with passion and purpose is our divine priviledge!

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wounds of my life have been living with the change in my father after he had a major brain hemorrhage when I was only 9 years old, losing my mother when I needed her the most and feeling like my soul was drying up because I felt stuck in a career that was literally sucking the life out of me. I won’t go into the details of any of these, but let it suffice to say that these events were all deep and profound cuts into my soul. I believe it is possible to heal anything, but it always takes time and the healing happens in layers, never all at once. Through all of these occurrences earlier in my life, I have learned deep compassion, limitless tenacity to never give up and to live full out NOW…because none of us know what could happen tomorrow. My healing has taken place through deep introspection, isolation, some mentoring with help along the way and allowing myself to feel my deep grief and pain without bypassing. Was is loney and sad…yes. but it is necessary to ask ourselves these deep questions and to focus on how to move forward towards a happy and fulfilling life no matter what. Some of my greatest teachers are those who have experienced what I feel is so much worse that what I have, and somehow they made it to the top and are happy and productive souls.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
The most important truth I have learned is this – to love yourself first. Sometimes this claim attracts rebuttal i.e. “But I have children, they are my first priority….or, “But my mother is ill and I have to foremost focus on her care”…just as a few examples. At the end of the day, reality is this…I am very compassionate and strive to always be understanding and respectuful towards anothers plight in life. But here is the truth…if you are not strong, healthy and cared for by you, no one else can do this for you. And just like a vehicle trying to operate without gas or electricity, it will stop running when empty. We need to keep ourselves filled up emotionally, physicaly and spiritually first, and give to others from the overflow so we don’t figuratively and literally burn ourselves out. It is a delicate dance but an essrntial one.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Up until a few years ago I felt like I was unconsciously living a life that I was “expected” to do…now, I am finally consciously creating a life i was meant to do!
