Ron Placone shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Ron , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I clean the litter boxes for my cats, Luna and Livorno. I don’t know, something about starting the day knee deep in cat poop keeps ya humble and reminds you what’s important. At the end of the day, it’s all about my household. My wife, the cats, and beyond that my friends and family. The rest is just, well, also important, but that’s the core of it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Ron Placone. I’m a comedian, writer, podcaster, filmmaker. My feature film Left At Wall just won Best Feature at the ProToPost International Film Festival in Genoa, Italy. It can be streamed on Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube Movies, Google Play, Tubi and a bunch of other places. My podcast is called 1000 w/ Ron Placone and can be found wherever ya get your pods. If you like lefty comedy with a couple shots of punk rock and cats, I got ya covered.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The first time I left the US and traveled abroad, it really opened my eyes to the horrors of the US war machine. At that time, I was fairly young and Iraq was happening. I wasn’t sure why we were over there. I started asking more questions and reading more books. It wasn’t until I went abroad for the first time, though, that I really saw it firsthand. It changed the way I saw my own country. It also gave me a greater sense of purpose. Like, what are we doing if we’re not trying to do something about this, ya know?
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
It’s easy to get comfortable when times are good and forget that another valley will inevitably be on the way. Failure and suffering, while I don’t care much for it (who does?) is an excellent teacher. It’s help me prioritize my time and life better and better. It’s taught me how to make the most out of every second of everyday. It’s taught me how to avoid burnout, while still knowing that sometimes you have to push harder than others. Most importantly, though, it’s given me a better perspective. I try not to worry about things the way I used to. It’s a never ending journey, but I’ve gotten better.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. For better or worse, heh.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
Sky diving. Haven’t done it yet, a little scared to, but it’s on the bucket list. I gotta get to it kinda soon.
