We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jason Goldberg. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Jason, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I wake up early at 6:30 and check my emails, before getting my daughter up for school. That’s followed by daily minutiae: making breakfast, brushing her teeth and getting ready for my day. Once she’s at school, I respond to more emails and prep other emails for project updates. When I’m not working on a film, I’m either writing a script or prepping another project. I am currently an executive producer for an AI story building company, so a lot of my time is taking meetings and working within the UI (user interface), creating new videos and bettering the tool for launch.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jason Goldberg and I am a horror filmmaker (screenwriter, producer) with projects on Shudder, Screambox and distributed by Dark Sky, Terror Films, among other labels. I currently have SICK PUPPY preparing for its 2026 release, as well as GATOR FACE for Epic Pictures. I am currently working for a start-up tech company, aiding in their content creation and marketing. I’m rep’d by Zero Gravity Management and WPA.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Honestly, I don’t ever feel powerful. There have been times when people have recognized me and stopped for a photo or to chat about movies., and/or making movies, but that made me feel more of a sense of pride. When I made the Hit List in 2018 and I was invited to a Roadmap Writers event, I was stopped on the street by a young writer that read my material. That was really an inspiring moment, but I’ve been writing/producing since 2006. I made my first short in 2011, after being hit by a car and using the lawsuit insurance money to create my dream project – a modern take on Kafka’s “Metamorphosis.” That’s almost 15 years ago… and I’m still at it.
My best advice is: Never give up because once you do, the dream is dead. It’s fine to take breaks and rekindle your passion (for any art), just don’t give up.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I wrote and sold a movie called STAY OUT OF THE ATTIC and I was supposed to co-direct that project. Unfortunately, there were creative differences (which I found out, after I was fired from the project), and that nearly put me in the hospital. I was having panic attacks and in a very dark place. Low and behold, I was later asked to watch the final cut… I offered notes and helped make it way better. I then sold it to Shudder, and since then have been working steadily.
I did take a short break before putting together GLORIOUS, which had Academy Award-winner JK Simmons and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood). Trust is hard in this industry, but if you find a few good folks – be sure to keep them close.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Loyalty and honesty.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I have a blank Final Draft document in front of me. I know no matter what’s going on in my life, I can create a new world… or situation, and escape my chaos for a little.
