Betsy Hammer shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Betsy, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes, three recent moments come to mind. First, one of my singing students started opening for and playing throughout Europe with Sting all Summer and this Fall. Secondly, one of my voice students is appearing in “Wicked: For Good” as “Young Glinda.” Thirdly, I was asked to perform a role in a small feature film. All of these have made me feel very happy and proud.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Betsy Hammer, actress/singer/songwriter/vocal coach/recording artist. I love performing in films, on TV, in commercials, onstage, and love sharing my knowledge and experiences with students who come to my vocal coaching classes. I am just as excited for my students’ successes as I am for my own! I’m all about enjoying and developing talents while maintaining a joyful positive attitude and ongoing professionalism. Perhaps what’s unique about me is that although I’m a Classically-trained singer with my Bachelor of Music degree, plus two years in a renowned Master of Voice program, I co-starred in a show co-produced on Broadway, sang Country music in Nashville, have had my songs recorded by artists on major labels, and am now in LA where I’ve worked and sung with Adam Sandler and am in a number of his films. It’s been a wild and wonderful ride thus far and I love every minute of it!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I was twenty months old, being pushed in a stroller by my sister. She stopped on the sidewalk to talk with a friend. I listened intently to them chatting. When I sensed it was a good time to talk, I spoke up and contributed to the conversation. My sister’s friend looked at me in awe and exclaimed, “She’s so precocious!” They smiled at me in amazement. I remember thinking that this new word “precocious” was something strong and good because they stared at me with fascination and admiration. It certainly made me feel powerful.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
The suffering I’ve experienced has taught me more patience and gratitude. A couple of years ago I had a terrible accident that shattered my hip and created extraordinary pain in my lower extremities. It slowed me down. I take my time more than ever and feel more appreciation for every good thing in life.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that being kind and staying positive really matter to me.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will remember Betsy Hammer as a fun, multi-talented lady with a good heart and a beautiful smile, known to love deeply and truly. A lover of people, animals, music, the arts and life.
