Sam Violet of San Gabriel Valley on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Sam Violet and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Sam, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently I was feeling very down, and just by chance I found an old album of some photos I took in 2014. I was just a kid, and for some reason, I had managed to take some really beautiful, sentimental, and well composed photos. Probably without even meaning to. And it calmed me down. Looking at these photos made me feel proud of my younger self. It was completely out of nowhere, and it almost felt absurd, but it was comforting to see this version of my creative eye through the eyes of my younger self again. I had forgotten what it looked like.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Sam Violet, an illustrator and designer based in Los Angeles. I’ve always been inspired by fear, beauty, dreams, horror, mystery, and the impossible. I’m very into fashion, and I’m also a seamstress. With every new piece, I find a way to weave my love for fashion and self expression into my work.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that would plan years and years ahead about what my life would look like and how I would get there. I am extremely grateful to have had a clear vision of the goals I want to achieve in my life, and even more grateful for the ability to chase after those dreams. Planning is an invaluable skill for the first phase of achieving your goals. But if there’s anything I’ve learned from the personal struggles I have endured this year, it’s that every single day is precious, and at a certain point, you need to learn how to live your life one day at a time. Life is priceless. Cherish every second you have with your loved ones, with yourself, with the things you enjoy most in your life. You can still plan ahead, but don’t lose track of the present.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Stop dimming your light for people who don’t want to see you shine

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
The belief that our world can be a better place for all of us

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m making art, listening to music, and in a flow state. It can be any type of art, from sewing to crafting to painting. I also feel very at peace when I walk outside in the early hours of the morning. I’m not a morning person, but there’s something so tranquil about the background noise of our world when you actually stop to listen
