Ryan Swan of Irvine on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Ryan Swan shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Ryan, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’d like to start by saying thank you for the opportunity to share my experiences with your readers. In 2017, I was given an opportunity to completely change the way I looked at life. Since then, I’ve been on this journey of constantly learning, growing, and applying what I’ve learned to become the best version of myself. That one decision really set me on the path I’m on today.

What I’m chasing in life is growth. In every way. Mentally, spiritually, emotionally. I want to keep evolving, not just for myself but for the people around me. That drive to grow has brought me so many blessings. It’s given me peace in my heart, helped my relationships with friends and family thrive, and even helped my business succeed when a lot of others didn’t make it.

If I stopped chasing growth, I think I’d lose that sense of purpose that keeps me going. Growth is what keeps me alive inside. Iit’s what keeps me motivated, grounded, and inspired every single day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ryan Swan, and I’m the owner and founder of Swan Auto Detailing. I specialize in high-end paint correction and ceramic coatings for luxury and exotic vehicles. But for me, detailing has always been more than just making cars look great — it’s about craftsmanship, trust, and creating an experience that truly reflects the pride people have in their vehicles.

I’ve always had an engineering mindset and a passion for problem-solving, and that drives how I approach every project. I take pride in understanding the science behind paint, materials, and protection — and in pushing for results that exceed expectations.

What makes Swan Auto Detailing unique is the integrity and heart behind it. My life has had its share of challenges, but those experiences shaped the values that guide my work today. Honesty, consistency, and growth. Every car, every client interaction, is personal to me. Right now, I’m focused on growing the brand here in SoCal. I started a joint venture with another company who fills in the gaps that my business has and vice versa. I’m excited to see where this takes us and together we will continue to raise the bar for what true automotive detailing and paint protection should represent.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That’s a great question. Growing up, and even as an adult for a long time, I truly believed I was shy and introverted. I moved around a lot as a kid, and I was constantly the new kid at school. Every couple of years, I’d have to start over, walking into a classroom full of strangers with sweaty hands, a red face, and my heart pounding. Over time, I started to believe that meant I was shy, that something about me just didn’t fit.

It wasn’t until I started my business that I realized that story I told myself wasn’t true at all. Once I began meeting people every day, connecting with clients, and sharing my passion for what I do, I discovered that I actually love engaging with people. I just never had the stability or confidence back then to see it.

Looking back now, what I thought was a weakness turned out to be one of my greatest strengths. Constantly being the new kid taught me how to adapt, connect, and communicate with anyone. It gave me empathy, awareness, and the ability to build real relationships, qualities that have shaped not only my business but also the person I’ve become.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. It was right before a close friend gave me a choice that changed everything. At that time, I was lost, broken, and convinced I was headed down the same path as my biological father, who took his own life when I was eighteen. He was thirty-six then, the same age I was when my world started to fall apart. It was a dark and lonely time, but that one conversation, and having someone believe in me when I didn’t believe in myself, completely changed the direction of my life.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
For a long time, I really believed that if someone wronged me, the best thing to do was just cut them out of my life. I thought that was how you protected your peace. But over time, I realized that mindset was actually pretty naive.

What I’ve learned is that most of the time, those situations come from not having healthy boundaries in the first place. When you set clear boundaries, you don’t have to cut people off, you just create space where respect and understanding can exist.

At the end of the day, we’re all human, and people are going to make mistakes. If we respond by shutting everyone out instead of communicating or learning from it, we’re not really growing, we’re just repeating the same pattern. Now I focus on building better boundaries instead of building walls.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m out in nature or on the open road. There’s something powerful about being surrounded by silence, hiking through the forest, the mountains, or the desert where it’s just me and the sounds of nature. In those moments, I can feel everything that doesn’t serve me start to fall away. It’s like hitting the reset button on my mind and spirit.

I also find peace behind the wheel, driving with the windows down, music up, and nothing but open road ahead. There’s freedom in that stillness, a space where my thoughts settle and clarity sets in. Those quiet moments remind me why I do what I do, and they always bring me back centered, grounded, and ready to keep growing.
