Today we’d like to introduce you to 2lm
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We’ve been friends for over a decade, with music serving as the glue that’s always kept us connected. Years back, we launched our first brand, 2LiveMafia, inspired by a mix of vinyl DJing, hip-hop, EDM, and the art of B boying. These influences have shaped us into the diverse artists we are today. In January 2024, we embraced a new chapter by rebranding our duo’s stage name to 2LM, marking an exciting evolution in our musical journey. Our sound is really a duality, a fusion of dark and light, driving basslines, infectious rhythms, classic tracks, and percussive grooves to pay homage to our roots.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have our pros and cons, one of the biggest challenges we face is balancing our weekend gigs with early morning shifts. The struggle to make it to work after performing late-night sets is real, but it’s a challenge we’ve learned to embrace. That said, our schedule does offer a silver lining, having Monday through Thursday off gives us time to focus on our craft. There are definitely moments of little to no sleep, but we appreciate the grind and what it allows us to pursue. In hindsight, our journey and roots have deeply influenced our music production and DJing. Whether things are easy or difficult, there’s always room for growth, and we’re committed to letting those experiences shape us as artists. We really started from ground zero.. We are not musically inclined, majority self taught, we bought every piece of our equipment and built up our empire gradually over time. We feel like people are barely seeing and trusting the vision of what we have to offer to the world. However the more natural and less forced of the production and networking we were, the more it has rewarded us so we really just flowing with what the universe has to offer us.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We currently have been working on some huge projects, one is with the likes of Akon, the other is with Lee Foss and other reputable labels in the EDM industry. We have also performed at a lot of events and shows such as Academy LA, LicknDip, Space Taco, Electric Jungle, Underwar3 and many more. We also have a series that started last year called BYOB (Bring Your Own Beats). The idea revolved around one of the shows we were influenced by growing up called Rhythm Roulette where special guests come on the show to flip samples from vinyls and show their own technique and flow of creativity. We on the other hand are using 1 cassette , 1 vinyl and 1 CD to open the ends of creativity and are doing an EDM curation rather than a hip hop curation. What makes it special is we tell our guests to set a challenge for themselves to really stand out amongst the rest and try to break the social norm practices of music production. We’ve seen some real ingenuity behind the process of these people and even including ourselves and continue to evolve this idea over time per season.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Honestly what truly makes us happy is seeing others win, especially those who’ve been grinding as long as we have. Some of our friends have been in music for 5, 10, or even more years and are now finally getting the recognition they deserve and making major moves. Watching their success motivates us to keep pushing forward. We have a very close tribe to us that we all believe are on the same mission and bring out the best of each other so shout out to our fellow artists TheConnect, Mimss, Skonka, Awsumo, & Tiedye, they’re all amazing in what they do best with their creativity. We’re also incredibly grateful for our fans who continue to ask for more music from us. Sharing our music and seeing listeners’ vibe with it is one of the most rewarding feelings. Your support literally fuels our passion, and we can’t wait to keep delivering more for you.
