Rising Stars: Meet Yue Zhu of los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yue Zhu

Hi Yue, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey in dance and choreography began in China, where I developed a deep passion for the art and built a solid foundation through intense training. Growing up, I participated in numerous stage performances that enriched my experience and fueled my love for dance.

To further my artistic development, I moved to the United States to study at CalArts. There, I was fortunate to learn from renowned mentors like Javier De Frutos, Francesca Penzani, Rosanna Gamson, and Dimitri Chamblas. Their guidance was instrumental in shaping my artistic vision and honing my skills.

In the U.S., I worked on several significant projects, including ‘Fall into My Palms’ and ‘Dancing Variations.’ My own piece, ‘Formula,’ showcases my unique style and innovative approach to choreography.

Currently, I am actively involved with Dance Camera West, where I contribute through roles in directing, choreographing, editing, and judging. My work includes exciting projects like the dance film “One Human Show” and the film “However,” where I serve as director, choreographer, and editor. I am also participating in the Dance Camera West Visibility Grant Program.

From China to the U.S., my journey has been a blend of rigorous training, inspiring mentorship, and continuous creative exploration, leading me to where I am today—a dedicated artist committed to pushing the boundaries of dance on film.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey in dance and choreography has not been without its challenges. Along the way, I encountered numerous obstacles, especially in discovering my unique dance style.

In China, where I received my foundational training, I mastered many traditional dance techniques. However, within these established frameworks, I often felt that my creativity and emotions were not fully expressed. This spurred me to explore how I could break free from these constraints and uncover my own dance language.

One of the most significant challenges was blending the essence of both Eastern and Western cultures into my work, creating pieces that are both profound and visually unique. I dedicated a great deal of time to research and practice, continually refining my art.

Gradually, through these efforts, I found my unique dance style. I began creating works like ‘Formula,’ which showcases my distinctive choreographic voice and innovative approach. My involvement in projects such as ‘Fall into My Palms’ and ‘Dancing Variations’ further helped to validate and enhance my artistic expression.

While the road has been arduous, these challenges have made me more resilient and have clarified my artistic direction. Through continuous exploration and experimentation, I not only discovered my dance style but also grew significantly as an artist. Today, I am committed to pushing the boundaries of dance on film, always seeking new ways to innovate and inspire.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was an introspective and sensitive child. Despite my reserved nature, I harbored a deep passion for art and creativity. Dance quickly became a vital outlet for expressing my inner world. On stage, I could communicate emotions through movement, which made me feel both liberated and confident.

As an introvert, I spent considerable time in solitude, lost in my thoughts. This quiet time allowed me to reflect deeply and focus intensely on my dance and artistic endeavors. I found joy in observing the world around me, drawing inspiration from the nuances of everyday life, and weaving these insights into my work.

Beyond dance, I was an avid reader, particularly drawn to literature and art books. Reading broadened my perspective and provided a sanctuary of peace and strength. I also enjoyed painting and music, which offered additional creative outlets and complemented my dance practice.

Even though I was introverted, I was always curious and eager to explore new experiences. Each new challenge and adventure was an opportunity for personal and artistic growth. My reflective and focused nature enabled me to delve deeply into my artistic ideas and express them with subtlety and depth.

In essence, my journey was one of quiet yet fervent dedication to the arts. This introspective nature allowed me to cultivate a unique artistic voice, continually evolving and pushing the boundaries of my dance and choreography.
