Today we’d like to introduce you to Vin Chee.
Vin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born in Brunei, raised in Kuala Lumpur. I am the third of five sons. My first career goal was to become a singer. My mother sent me to music lessons when I was 13. At 17, I went to Seoul, Korea to study Korean language and auditioned every week for Korean record labels looking for new K-pop artists. That didn’t work out for me.
My backup plan was magic. I was walking around Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur one day with my dad, we saw a street magician performing. My dad signed me up for my first magic classes. I started performing magic professionally at the age of 19 and even taken part in the Asia’s Got Talent television show. At 21, I was bitten by the acting bug when I got to work with Chris Hemsworth in a Michael Mann movie. At 26, I made my first movie appearance in the blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians. At 30, I bought my one-way ticket to the U.S. and now currently reside in Los Angeles.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth. I had very few acting opportunities in Malaysia in the past ten years. Probably less than 5. The biggest struggle was not being at the right place at the right time. That is when I decided to quit my full-time job, leave everything behind in Malaysia, and move to Los Angeles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in sleight of hand, mentalism and telekinesis, I can move things without touching them and I’m even able to bend metal with my mind. I currently perform magic at Black Rabbit Rose, a Magic Show Lounge & Theatre in Hollywood, CA.
I am most proud of myself for being able to move to the United States on my own and survive. It was full of difficulties and risks but I did it. I believed in my own dreams and was willing to work towards it. If you want it bad enough, you will find a way.
I am a magician and actor. I do martial arts. I speak five languages – English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, and Korean.
