Today we’d like to introduce you to Underground Chemist.
Hi Underground, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From the Heart of Bakersfield to the Soul of the West Coast: Meet the Beat Architect
Behind the Sound — [UNDERGROUND CHEMIST]
Bakersfield, CA – In a city often overlooked in the Hip Hop conversation, one music
producer is quietly crafting a legacy that echoes from the streets of Bakersfield to the heart
of West Coast rap culture. Born and raised in Bakersfield, California, [Underground
Chemist] has spent nearly two decades creating raw, soulful, and street-certified beats
that resonate with Hip Hop purists and modern artists alike.
Specializing in West Coast, Boom Bap, and classic Hip Hop production, [Underground
Chemist] draws inspiration from legendary artists and beatmakers like Dr. Dre, DJ
Battlecat, Rick Rock, Mr. Shadow, Mr. Lil One, and Psycho Realm, while also nodding to
lyrical icons like Vinnie Paz and Rhyme Asylum. His signature sound fuses nostalgic
Chicano rap energy with modern sonic grit — a sound that’s both a tribute and an
evolution.
“I started out wanting to rap when I was 16,” [Underground Chemist] recalls. “My homie
gave me a burnt CD back in 2006 with beats from Jay-Z, Xzibit, and Ice Cube. That was my
introduction to production. But everything changed when I met Cris from Blaze A Lot
Records. He showed me FL Studio 4 at his spot on the east side of Bakersfield — that
moment lit the fire.”
Since that pivotal day, [Underground Chemist] has dedicated himself to music, producing
hundreds of tracks and contributing to over 12 full-length projects. His dedication and
authenticity have earned him collaborations with West Coast royalty including Kokane,
Baby Bash, Mr. Shadow, Mr. Lil One, Conejo, Dezzy Hollow, and J.me, among others.
His beats are more than just instrumentals — they’re emotional time capsules. “Music is
my calling,” he says. “It’s the only thing that’s helped me through the highs and lows. Every
beat I make is a reflection of my mood, my story, and my city. Music is inspiration — it’s
therapy, it’s truth, it’s life.”
As the underground continues to thrive and the mainstream looks back toward its roots,
[Underground Chemist] stands ready to provide the soundtrack. With a deep catalog, real
history, and a love for the culture that can’t be faked, he’s not just producing beats — he’s
preserving the legacy of the West.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth ride in the beginning i had to to do alot of reserch on on finding good sounds to produce high quality beats, i used stocked plug ins that came in fl studio which they are alright but not no industry sounds. i wanted my stuff to bang like some E40 or Dr. Dre type stuff. another challenge is over doing it which i been doing this since 2006 sometimes gotta give it a break. specially when you get beat block, self care and mental health is a big part of it becouse if your not all there mentaly theres no motivation you are just forcing yourself and nothing good comes out or nothing gets finished. took me over 10 years for my first beat to sale, another struggle is navigating an inconsistent income, i never tried selling beats before untill 2018 i said fk it ima make a beat store thru beatstars ever since i been selling beats.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

One of my favorite child hood memories is when my younger brother was messing with the house stereo and he pressed an eq button the eq of the vocals, i started freestyling he said i was dope lol i grabbed another smaller boom box put a casset tape pressed record then i put the boom box in front of the house stereo speaker that played the eq beat without vocals and recorded my first freestyles, after that i wanted to learn how to make beats
