Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Hill.
Hi Tiffany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, I grew up in Los Angeles with my hard-working single mother. Eventually, we moved to West Hollywood and I was exposed to a diverse population of kids that encouraged me to follow my own form of self-expression. I wanted to study film so I aimed for a liberal arts degree at the start of my undergrad year. After a little self-reflection and the desire to make a more positive impact in my community I switched my major to Social Work and earned my BSW and MSW still uncertain about what area I wanted to specialize in. During my post-grad year I was fortunate to find a wonderful non-profit that delivered mental health services. It was there where I found my passion for working as therapist. I was already aware of the need for more therapists who were women and men of color so it was more like a higher calling for me. After my practicum ended I knew I wanted to work with marginalized communities and it was almost serendipitous that I found a practice that catered to marginalized communities primarily focused on delivering mental health services to those who were unable to access them. I recall telling my former mentor that I had a passion to help the LGBTQIA+ and people of color which was the mission of this agency. Now I’m working my dream job !
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many, I’ve encountered challenges and obstacles in my life. My mother is a cancer survivor and we struggled quite a bit growing up. I’ve lost friends to drugs and violence. I later learned two of my close friends from high school, who were transgender women, were murdered one from sex-work and the other by a family member during an argument. Through it all I’ve learned the value of life and gained a strong admiration for those who live authentically despite the injustices they face.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m currently a clinical provider for AMR Therapy and Support Services. I work as an associate therapist delivering mental health services for diverse populations, many who are uninsured. I specialize in working with individuals who struggle with gender identity, racial and childhood trauma, anxiety/depression, and who have issues with body image. I also work with a variety of couples that include cis, interracial, queer, poly, and ethical-non monogamous. I’ve recently completed my hours and I’m on the verge of taking my LCSW exam to become a fully licensed practitioner. My ultimate dream is to eventually start my own practice that specializes in working with cis/trans women of color, sex workers, and women who have been formerly incarcerated. I’m a strong advocate for women, especially those who have been discarded due to systemic injustice.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Absolutely, my number one cheerleader is my mom who advocated for me and supported me throughout my life. My best friend Nadra Rachell who i’ve learned from, cried with and laughed alongside for over 20 years. We both came up as social workers and she has gone on to do amazing things in her own career. I couldn’t be more proud of her and honored that she is my bestie. My former clinical supervisor Amanda Hill and Francis Hookstra from Samuel Dixon in Santa Clarita. I would say I gained all of my confidence as a psychotherapist from them in the early beginning and they inspired me to continue follow my heart and intuition. Lastly, my current Clinical Supervisor Andrea Sanserino who has supported me throughout my journey along with my clinical director Ann Russo!!! What can i say about Ann that would do her justice lol Ann believed in me from the very beginning. I was so moved by her mission and commitment to helping the same populations I wanted to help and I’ve learned so much from her. She always challenges me and has trusted my decisions despite at times not having much faith in myself. She is one of my dearest friends and thee absolute best boss I’ve ever had the pleasure working for.
