Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarryn Rossetti
Hi Tarryn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m currently an unscripted television producer. I started my career 13 years ago, editing sizzle reels for a development company, which led to producing a few pilots of the shows we were able to sell. I fell in love with producing and began pursuing that path full time. One of my first jobs was as an Associate Producer on a National Geographic show called Building Wild. As a nature enthusiast, it was a perfect situation for me – getting to make television literally in the wild! My career took off from there, and I had the opportunity to produce a wide variety of unscripted shows – from Love Island to American Ninja Warrior Jr. In the last 5 years, I’ve found myself exclusively producing food shows, both baking and cooking. Most recently, I produced the very fun Wizards of Baking – a Harry Potter baking competition for Food Network. And one of my favorite shows I’ve worked on was Killer Cakes on Amazon – a special effects horror cake baking show!
Part of what I love about producing for unscripted is the unpredictability of it. You’re following reality and people’s experiences in these extreme situations and it’s our job to tell their story. At the time, you don’t always know and can’t always predict what the story will be, but an incredible part of the process is creatively bringing it all to life in an episode or series.
Besides producing, I have also found a great outlet for my creativity in a podcast I host with my friend Nicole Gershenson. The podcast is a comedy show called “All my Friend Are F**ked.” where Nicole and I invite on our friends, to discuss their lives and what makes them so interesting. We launched our podcast in January, and it’s been picking up speed. It’s been an incredibly fun and rewarding project, with our episodes streaming on Spotify and Apple Podcast.
I’ve also ventured into my own personal storytelling by blogging about my cross country bike trip, which you can find at TarrynRossetti.com. I rode my bicycle solo across the country in 81 days, and camped the whole way! It was an incredible adventure and taught me that life is all about just taking another step. The bike trip wasn’t looking at the big picture of me riding across the country, it was about just getting on my bike every day and going for a ride. You can accomplish big and amazing things in life, that can be overwhelming, by just taking it one bike ride at a time. It’s also something that really applies to producing too, every small element you accomplish gets you closer to the goal of making an entire show.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Breaking into the TV industry is never easy. I grew up in New Hampshire where the dream of working in Hollywood seems impossible and far away. Both of my parents worked as engineers and had no connection into the industry, and it was a career no one else around us was familiar with. So the biggest struggle was finding, and holding onto, the drive and motivation at a young age to move to Los Angeles and pursue such an unknown and intimidating career. Another challenge is that being in a mostly freelance industry, you’re constantly hustling for the next gig and at times aren’t sure when the next job will come. But the upside of that is your schedule is flexible. Over the years, this has granted me amazing opportunities to travel, take time off, and prioritize other goals when I am not working.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I produce in the field (on set) and in post (editing footage and building an episode). But my main passion is post. My expertise is in sifting through hours of footage and cutting it into a strong and interesting story that will keep the viewers coming back. I first started by editing music videos when I was 11 years old and that grew into other passion projects throughout the next two decades. I still get to follow my passion by editing my podcast videos, and over the years have made countless videos for my friends and family. I consider myself an editor, though I do not edit professionally in the TV industry – I like to keep the editing process to my outside creative endeavors.
Overall, I am a creative. I love photography, portrait photography, painting and sculpting. It’s an incredible thing to be able to tell stories not only through words, but also images and multiple different mediums. For me, being a creative is all about telling a story that people connect with and that’s the most important aspect to any content.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
My next stage of life, I want to get into editing music videos for artists, which is where my passion for storytelling first began. Also tune into our podcast! It’s silly and fun!
