Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanner Horn.
Hi Tanner, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Phoenix, Arizona. My parents will tell you they were good, law abiding people but really they were just dope smoking hippies at a time when dope smoking wasn’t exactly accepted by society. They loved us and tried their best but my dad’s alcoholic nature meant that he wouldn’t live to see 30. Unfortunately, he took his own life when he was 29 & I was just four years old. I didn’t talk about this stuff for the longest time, but now I know that through my honesty and openness, I might be able to help someone who I’ve never even met, and that’s really what it’s all about. It’s through that tragedy that I began my musical journey. It’s through that loss that I yearned for acceptance and communication. And it’s through the acoustic guitar that I first found my vehicle for that communication. On top of songwriting and performing, I also create modern art/paintings that are hanging in spaces all across the country. My main inspiration for my art is Basquiat, Warhol, & Picasso just to name a few.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a vibrant ride full of its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade it for all gravy all the time…Why you ask? For one, I don’t think there’s ever been any art of any kind that’s worth a damn that was created when everything was going all right all the time. It’s the bad times that give us humility and perspective. Two things every human being could use a little more of. And since I inherited my father’s addictive gene, that means I’ve had plenty of times in my life where I’ve had to endure pain & heartache. And that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface on the pain & heartache I’ve caused for others. An addicts life is a cursed life. I hate to say it, but it’s true.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to work as a professional actor/singer-songwriter/artist. Right now, I’m more known for my artwork than anything else but I keep all aspects of my career engaged all the time so what I’m most excited about right now is my new band that was formed during quarantine. We are called Space Cheetah & we recorded our debut ep during lockdown. (Safely, I must add). We are releasing that in 2021 & hopefully, we will be able to tour to support it. I think what makes me unique is I’m not a one dimensional artist. For instance, most people I know who are actors just stick to acting, and so it goes for artists and musicians. And the truth is my brain isn’t satisfied just doing one thing. Without sounding like a conceited person, I like to think of myself as a creative force. It’s through this creativity that I have found my identity. And identity in this life is more important than anything. Knowing who you truly are and not being willing to compromise those values is what will set you apart in the end, especially in a place like LA.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love YouTube because I can learn how to do basically anything there. Also, with how far technology has come in just the last ten years I’ve been able to adopt a DIY attitude towards basically everything in my life and with it, I’ve been able to teach myself how to produce/engineer my band’s albums, been able to teach myself how to code and build websites, you name it I’ve been able to learn how to do it All without having to pay for a teacher. It’s impressive times we live in.
