Rising Stars: Meet Slomo Alexander of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Slomo Alexander

Hi Slomo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Blessings hi my name is Jaylan but I go by “slomo”. Just a country boy from a small town in South Carolina called Florence. Grew up in Charlotte North Carolina where I really started my journey. I live in downtown LA in Los Angeles. I model mainly but I also do styling for artist, music video and different fashion brands. I started modeling about 6 years ago back in North Carolina I was doing photography before modeling shooting for my high school and different local brands. Was shooting for a brand in North Carolina and was asked to model as well. I think that’s when i realized what I wanted to do. It was something I was so uncomfortable doing and I loved that I hated being center of attention and having eyes on me. But when i modeled it never fazed me it felt like something that pushed and helped me break out my shyness and helped me grow not be so standoffish. I graduated high school and knew I wanted to move to LA so I worked and worked till I could save enough to move. Well what I thought was enough I saved about $2000 and packed whatever I could in one suitcase and left 3 days before Christmas in 2019. I lived in a two bathroom sharing one room with a close friend of mind each sleeping on a twin bed on each side of the room. The pandemic and I took advantage shot as much as I could made connections and build my face in LA. Too now working up to the point I’m at now finding new doors I never thought I would open. Doing things that I didn’t know would be apart of the journey!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely wasn’t an easy road whatsoever! Going through the pandemic with no money not knowing anyone trying to make a way. Being very young and not really having experience in what I was trying to do learning as I’m experiencing this big city at the time coming from my country town. Even later down the road when I was doing well and things were just slow put me in a hard situation. Not having a place to stay but still trying not to forget the mission etc. It was so much that I went through but I wouldn’t change a thing. It helped me mature it discipline me and also made me appreciate so much.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Modeling has been one of the things I loved the most. Being able to express myself through clothing and diving deeper and understanding something I loved doing all my life dressing well and feeling good in my wardrobe. Styling I’ve been doing for almost two years now and it was never part of the plan and I also didn’t expect it to be as impactful in my life. Stepping into another world styling things I never thought I would be apart of. As of reason I been getting into set design for furniture something I always wanted to do and eventually doing interior design down the road. The question what separates me from others is always a funny question to me cause it’s really nothing I ever think about. I love individuality so I just stay true to myself true to what I love & believe and hope people can appreciate what i think is real genuine art. Stay true to my heart and it will attract what I need on this journey.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is staying true to myself. My family & close friends turned family. Doing what makes me happy. Learning and experiences new things that I haven’t before.
