Today we’d like to introduce you to Shitty Princess. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Shitty Princess

Shitty Princess is a music producer & touring DJ with a primary focus of supporting female & LGBTQIA+ creators in the pop & electronic dance genres. Shitty Princess also provides her artists she works with the comprehensive, modern-day artist development and enrichment services, including music creation, advances, distribution, merchandizing, publishing, tour production and industry education.

When it comes to music creation for under-represented artists, she elevates their authentic voices while leveling up their production values and building bridges that appeal throughout music culture. We believe female and LGBTQIA+ artists are more impactful when working together, so Shitty Princess encourages our artists to develop deep, genuine relationships with creatives across genres, styles and industries. She continuously works to grow a supportive and creative community that fosters and strengthens personal and professional development. She has worked with signed commercial artists and Recording Academy members such as Sam Smith, Post Malone & Steve Aoki.

Advances are generated from our profits, creating a sustainable business model which allows us to continually reinvest in our music creators that work with Shitty Princess. For distribution, we have partnered with tech company Create Music Group since 2015. Together, we’ve enjoyed a win-win partnership that delivers consistent growth. We maintain a robust merchandising strategy to establish an additional, significant revenue stream for an artist. To illustrate this, one platform that we offer is our formal partnership at New York Fashion Week with Soho Fashion Shows to showcase our artists’ merch brands. We work with industry-leading designers to keep the merchandise fresh with exclusive drops. We also work with top digital merchants such as Amazon and Shopify to lift their reach and keep up with consumer expectations. Shitty Princess also promotes and executes shows, giving our artists an opportunity to perform alongside some of the world’s biggest artists like Steve Aoki. We are able to secure these slots through existing relationships with the largest talent agencies in the world to help every artist on our live touring division of Shitty Princess.

Career Summary:

I started professional music production & DJ-ing in 2016 and currently work with artists that collaborate with industry leaders in the pop & electronic dance space, such as Sam Smith, Steve Aoki, Zeds Dead, Migos and Post Malone. My path to launching Shitty Princess started in my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, when I left my finance job in 2015 to pursue my music dreams.

With this momentum, I decided to commute to Los Angeles to try and get my record label off the ground. The original label growth strategy was teaching independent artists how to use social media to amplify their music. If they did this, they received an advance on their music releases to specifically be reinvested into advertisements on social media, YouTube & Spotify Play-listing. I would educate the artists on why it was important for the advance money to specifically be reinvested into their music.

In 2016, I made the official move to LA, joined the Recording Academy, found a tech start-up distributor and networked like wild to find new artists and grow my artist roster and expand the business. These steps allowed the artists to access bigger advances, opportunities and collaborate with mainstream talent in the pop & electronic dance genres. Today I tour the world as a DJ, carefully concealing my identity while music producing full-time in Los Angeles in West Hollywood.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No matter what level of success, being an artist is never a smooth road. The largest struggle to start was making the leap to do music full-time in LA after being born and raised in the Midwest. Now the struggle is equality in music production & on the live tour side. As a female music producer in the music industry, you have to be 10x better than the boys. You have to balance what their perception of “aggressive” vs “passionate” looks like. On the live tour side, I am never treated by the promotor as well as the male Djs that OPEN for me are treated. Since no one knows who I am, even backstage, I get to see and hear the reality as a fly on the wall and it is alarming the inequality of the music production and live music touring side.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a music producer and Dj specializing in commercial pop & Edm music. I am known for my catchy songs streaming billions across the globe. I am also known as a touring DJ who wears a lampshade over my head to carefully conceal my identity. It’s armor and protection against fame. I want my music to be heard and my message to be sent without the celebrity, just the authenticity and magical journey of Shitty Princess and my live set.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Singing, it was the only thing in school I was good at!
