Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelagh Gularte.
Hi Shelagh, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My career began when I got pregnant with my son. I was a newly single mother trying to navigate the stresses of figuring out how I was going to provide for my son and me. I was very lost at the time and didn’t really have a solid direction in life. My best friend suggested I started working as a receptionist at her salon for some extra money and the rest is history. I fell in love with everything about the industry and I realized I really could be good at it. I started beauty school and realized that I had a talent for styling. I taught myself to braid, started really perusing festival braiding and found a group to braid with at events. Now I specialize in intricate braiding and freelance styling for events.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had so many…
– Navigating the industry as a single mother.
– Dealing with the stresses of not being a colorist in this industry and trying to tackle the world of styling.
– Not fitting in at the “big salon” mold because I don’t do the everyday services.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist who specializes in creative styles and intricate braiding. I do a lot of creative shoots and festivals.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been the “Wednesday Adams” of life. In school, I never really fit into any one group of people. I hung out with everyone. I have always been sort of an oddball.
