Today we’d like to introduce you to Purv Bhavsar.

PURV BHAVSAR

Hi Purv, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I am Purv R. Bhavsar, and I was born and raised in Ahmedabad, India. I am 19 and currently based in Los Angeles, USA. I am learning and working to pursue a career in VFX and Film Industry.

This passion started in childhood, I was very much indulged in art and craft activities with my twin brother. I always liked to create characters from cardboard and play with them like they were in a movie scene. As I grew, my interest in art also got evolved, and I started doing Sketching. Most of my early teenage years have gone with sketching as my hobby besides my studies. I have always topped every Sketching and Art competition at my school.

In my teenage years, Marvel Movies were massive Box Office successes. I got hugely influenced by Marvel movies, and that led me to the curiosity that’s how these movies are made. I was so curious that I started watching Breakdowns and Behind The Scenes of Movies on YouTube. After watching those Breakdowns, I came to know the real-life meaning of “VFX”. I had an enhanced fascination for the concept of VFX. That was the point from where my brainbeats and heartbeats aligned for VFX, and I started craving for my career in VFX.

And after that, it pretty much became a sort of ritual for me to see BTS and Breakdowns of every new movie was released. Days Passed by and I started making my own Dioramas, Movie Posters and Titles.

Besides my academic’s studies, I was also having a little bit of free time, so I started researching about how to create my first VFX Short. After a couple of weeks, I got a nice blueprint in my mind that how VFX is done, how many stages are there in VFX, and how time-consuming it can be.

Then I started seeing videos about how to Start with it at home. I was doing all these things in my free time besides studies, so my progress was slow but gradually it added to a clear and deep understanding of VFX Lifecycle.

After I acquired detailed knowledge of where to start my VFX Journey, I downloaded some free software and started making some stuff with the help of follow-along tutorials on YouTube. I made nice advancement in a month just from YouTube tutorials only, but it was not fast enough as I didn’t know the exact a-z flow of the VFX Pipeline.

So, I joined a small institute to learn about VFX pipeline. I was there for about two months and then I dropped out. The very main reason for dropping out from the institute was that they were not focusing on the actual VFX Pipeline, which they promised at the time of joining the institute. Also, they were so slow, and I already had knowledge about a pipeline that at some point it felt like I knew more than my teachers. But little did we all know, there was a sudden outbreak of Coronavirus at the end of 2019. And due to the wild spreading of the virus, we witnessed a strict lockdown in India.

My 11th-grade exams also got canceled, we all were at home and there were no probable signs of when lockdown will be lifted, and in that I saw a golden opportunity to gain all possible knowledge about VFX and create as much as possible from home. I worked on improving my VFX Skills and enjoyed the lockdown at the same time. I started doing some CG Character Projects as practice and I gained so much knowledge while completing a few projects that I wanted to do it in more as per industry standards and make VFX my Career.

I told my decision to my parents, and they also motivated me to do what I really love. By that time, I graduated from 12th grade with the online exams as my finals also got canceled.

Then me and my parents started doing active research for a College offering industry-standard course material and also a practical approach towards VFX Industry. After researching for a while, my mother found the New York Film Academy (NYFA) situated in Los Angeles. After so many overnight healthy discussions and brain-storming sessions with my parents, we came up to the conclusion that I will join NYFA, and it will give me a required and optimum head start to my VFX career.

Then we completed the necessary formalities to secure my academic seat in the Conservatory 3D Animation and VFX program in NYFA. To submit a well-contained portfolio to NYFA, my creations created during the past two years became handy, and they happened to be so acclaimed that it awarded me with a scholarship from NYFA.

After almost a year in NYFA, I am graduating in this August 2023.

I would say that my Learning Voyage was an amazing amalgamation of both self-taught and academically learned. At 19 years of age, I am very satisfied and confident of my future and career that I started early, and now I can directly kickstart my career with all the knowledge I have gained during the last few years. I will be eternally grateful to my parents for supporting me in this decision in every way I needed. I am confident that definitely my career and future will earn pride for me and my family.

I will always keep learning, upgrading my skills, keep on practicing acquired skills, and will always be equipped with the latest tools and industry outsights for being always elevated in my VFX career.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Initial stage of career needs to prove your mettle by giving in consistent efforts, working late nights, being away from the comforts of home, sacrificing small but important things like food and sleep habits, getting acquainted with new environment and people, embracing new challenges and above all these deliver benchmarking performance.

At this juncture of my nascent shaping-up career, I am peaceful because I could make up and shape up as I had thought of. It is not important whether the road I am traveling is smooth or not, but I am 100% sure that the destination of my career I will be reaching will be the most beautiful and renowned worldwide.

It was a very smooth road for me until now and this is only because of my Parents. My parents always supported and motivated me in every decision I have made. My Father has always backed me financially and instilled in me with some great business virtues and skills. Whereas my mother has always supported me emotionally and cheered me on every small achievement.

I am determined and equipped to make great career in VFX and raring to accept challenges and grow.
