Rising Stars: Meet Pochiun Lin of San Francisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pochiun Lin

Hi Pochiun, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an industrial designer with six years of experience and dual degrees in engineering and industrial design. Over the course of my career, I’ve played a pivotal role in bringing 6~8 products to market, spanning consumer products, furniture, and robots.

My passion for design has been with me since childhood. I was always curious and eager to create. As a child, I would collect discarded wood and materials from my neighborhood, bringing them to my little workshop in the backyard. There, I would use these finds to build small chairs and tables for my secret hideout.

One of the most rewarding chapters of my career was at Bear Robotics, where I served as the lead designer for the “Servi Plus” robot. This project truly tested my ability to oversee an entire process, from project planning to product launch. Redesigning “Servi Plus” was a significant challenge, but it was incredibly fulfilling to see the robot win the iF Design Award in 2024. My work took me across the globe, visiting Asian manufacturers to ensure product quality and address design-related technical needs. These experiences sharpened my skills in managing the intricate details of the manufacturing process, from initial concept to final production. During my time at Bear Robotics, I also contributed to designing two additional robot concepts and three accessories, further solidifying my reputation as a versatile and innovative designer.

In addition to my professional work, I have a passion for woodworking and pottery, which I explore in my personal time. These creative outlets keep me connected to the hands-on aspects of design, constantly fueling my inspiration and creativity.

Looking back, my journey has been one of continuous learning and growth, driven by a passion for design and a commitment to excellence. I’m excited to see where this path will lead me next as I continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the design world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has certainly had its challenges. As a foreigner and a non-native English speaker, there have been significant obstacles to overcome. Navigating the complexities of the visa process has been one of the most difficult aspects. The uncertainty and constant need to secure a visa just to stay in the U.S. added an extra layer of stress on top of the demands of my work. It’s a battle that many immigrants face, and it can be both mentally and emotionally draining.

Additionally, language barriers made it challenging to communicate my ideas effectively at times, especially in a field like industrial design, where clear and precise communication is crucial. However, these challenges also pushed me to improve my language skills and develop a more resilient mindset. They taught me the value of persistence and adaptability, which have become essential traits in both my personal and professional life.

Despite these struggles, I’ve always stayed focused on my passion for design, which has helped me push through the difficulties and continue growing in my career.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an industrial designer, my work involves finding the perfect balance between aesthetics, functionality, user experience, and manufacturing cost. Every product I design must not only look great but also serve its purpose effectively and be feasible to produce at scale. This requires a deep understanding of materials, processes, and the market, as well as the ability to anticipate and solve potential challenges before they arise.

Collaboration is key in this field. I specialize in working closely with cross-functional teams, including leadership, designers, engineers, and marketing professionals. Each member brings a unique perspective, and my role often involves bridging these different viewpoints to create a cohesive product that meets everyone’s needs. I take pride in my ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and ensure that the final design aligns with both the creative vision and the practical requirements.

What sets me apart is my dual background in engineering and design, which allows me to approach problems from both a creative and a technical standpoint. This combination of skills has been instrumental in my ability to bring over 8 products to market, from consumer goods to advanced robotics. One of my proudest achievements was leading the design of the “Servi Plus” robot at Bear Robotics, a project that won the iF Design Award in 2024. The success of that project was a testament to my ability to manage complex design processes and deliver innovative solutions that resonate with users.

Ultimately, what drives me is the challenge of turning ideas into tangible products that people love and rely on. My passion for design, coupled with my technical expertise, enables me to push the boundaries of what’s possible and continuously strive for excellence in every project I undertake.
