Today we’d like to introduce you to Oshay Henderson.
Hi Oshay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Most definitely, let me start by introducing myself. My name is Oshay Henderson, I’m an up-and-coming content creator from South Central, Los Angeles. I also do photography and have my own clothing brand called Ascension, but my bread and butter is content creating. Most of my content consists of skits, but I’m also getting into vlogging and gaming. As a content creator, I write, act, shoot, and edit. My strong point is writing, but I’m well versed in everything. Everything I’m doing now is what I always wanted to do, I just never had the time or the resources.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No. When I finally got the time and resources, a lot of people didn’t see the vision. As discouraging as it was, I never gave up on myself. I worked my way up from the bottom to get to where I’m at today. I still have a long way to go, but I’m farther than where I started, and I’m grateful for the journey. I pride myself on doing what I say I’m going to do. It’s never in the timeframe I want it to be, but it’s always when it’s supposed to be. The pandemic was a turning point for me, it gave me the downtime I needed to pursue my endeavors. Prior to the pandemic, I was knee-deep in the rat race. I still work a regular job, but I’m on the verge fully living my life’s purpose.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Most of my skits revolve around 90’s/2000’s nostalgia. The first skit I ever came up with was a Socker Boppers parody. That was also my first somewhat viral moment, it received over half a million views on YouTube in a month. I haven’t been able to replicate that success, but I’m more concerned with putting out quality content as opposed to numbers. Even though my skits are usually less than two minutes, I treat them like an actual production. I write scripts for all my skits, I cast accordingly, even though most of the actors in my skits are my friends, I write to their strengths. Aside from Socker Boppers, I use actual filming equipment to shoot my skits. My specialty is writing, I’ll come up with an idea, most of the time at random, run it by a few of my colleagues, flush the idea out, then write the script. I’ve gotten good at punchlines, you never know what I got coming, which is what makes me special. That, and my authenticity.
When I first started doing skits, it was hard for me to come up with ideas because I didn’t want to be like everyone else. Now, if I do make a skit on a trendy subject matter, I know how to remix it and make it my own. From this point forward, most of my skits will be based on personal experiences because those are the most unique to me. My latest skit, How to Spot A Panhandler, was based on a personal experience. I’m most proud of my growth as a creator, I went from talking about doing it to doing it, and a lot of people can’t say the same. I’m constantly trying to improve, I took an acting class this past semester which not only helped me with my acting, but it also helped me with my writing as well. I love doing skits, I love making people laugh, especially because it’s out of my comfort zone. I do plan on moving onto bigger things eventually, but for now, I’m focused on dominating the playing field I’m on.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Yes, there is. To the people riding with me on my journey to greatness, thank you. I have big plans for when I’m able to do this full-time. I’m not looking to be in the spotlight too long. I don’t care for fame, I don’t care for fortune, I care to give back. I want to be able to create opportunities for others to chase their dreams because that’s true success!
