Rising Stars: Meet Mills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mills.

Hi Mills, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m 31 years old Director/Cinematographer from Chicago, IL. I’ve been in love with cinema, but really picked up a camera seriously around 2011, in the midst of the worldwide craze over Chief Keef, everyone was shooting their friend’s music videos and I was no different. I started there, went on to weddings, interviews, visuals, and to fast forward to now, where I now live in L.A. I’ve worked with people I never thought I would and I just made my first short film.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started my L.A. journey jobless on my cousin’s sofa. And even though my journey here has been uphill, my biggest struggle has been time apart from my family. Choosing your dreams can make you feel extremely selfish at times, but with the right people in your corner it’s hard to lose focus on your goal.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a director/cinematographer with a contemporary art style. I love to focus on African-American Culture and every facet of. I want to be a tool that shows people what African-American life is, what it feels like, and most of all how it should be. I’m probably the most proud of a piece I put together for Johnny Simmons A.S.C. at the opening night of exhibit “No Crystal Stair”. That piece landed me a mentor and tour around Paramount Studios. I think what separates me from others in my field is I believe in everyone I work with, in every project I pick up. I don’t see “gigs” I see people.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
One important lesson I learned during the crisis is no matter how bad things get, your creativity can eat the depression, work through the pain.
