Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikem Nahmir.
Hi Mikem, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Man, I don’t even know where to start… I’ve been through hell and back to get to where I am now. I used to be in prison. Had to do time from the age of 18 to the age of 21/22. I’ve been shot, stabbed, hit by a bus, you name it. I’ve lost my parents, my brother and a lot of friends. Never ONCE did I think about being a rapper and taking music seriously. It didn’t seem like something that I would enjoy doing until I actually started doing it. When my girlfriend of four years died, I didn’t know what to do and I was ready to go. A friend of mine let me come to his studio and listen to some beats. I feel like that ONE invite changed my life. Even though I’ve been through things that no regular person should have to deal with, I wouldn’t be who I am without music.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing about making music is “smooth”. Everything about this shit is difficult. Anybody with some rhythm can rap but it’s hard to write a GOOD song. Anybody can put sounds together but it’s hard to produce a GOOD beat. It’s hard to let yourself be vulnerable on a beat that might not fit the subject matter. Promoting the music (If you want it to be heard) is hard, too. Everything is so political nowadays and people are so cliquey. We also live in an age where you can’t really say what you want because everyone is so sensitive now. Every day is a struggle. Just gotta find your way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Outside of making music, I’m very involved with my community and the people that are a part of my community. I’m a skateboarder that tries to give back to younger skateboarders as much as I can but on top of that, I’m a black man that goes out of his way to make sure his people can’t receive as much as they deserve. I think right now that I am probably known more for rapping and skateboarding then I’m known for anything else. Everywhere that I go in the area that I live in, a lot of people have been starting to notice me for what I do on the microphone and on my skateboard. That’s something that I am the most proud of and it’s something that I really take pride in because I never thought that I would be able to create some things that would make people who don’t know me want to know who I am. I’m one of one. In every form, I’m really HIM.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
If anyone wants anything from me, they can email me at [email protected] or hit my dm on Twitter and Instagram at @realnamenahnah. I respond in under 24 hours or less. Just depends on what I’m doing when you hit me up. When it comes to supporting, all you gotta do is listen to the music, buy it when it’s for sell and spread the word immediately.
