Rising Stars: Meet Micole Williams of midcity LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micole Williams

Hi Micole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a creative, but also a business woman. Since middle school I have had a successful business and my peers, family, friends, salon and church community were my biggest customers. Back then it was about making jewelry and this continued and evolved into to my junior year in college but there was another side to me: media arts and education. My earliest business idea happened after graduating from Hightower High School’s Media Academy in FBISD and entering as a freshman in college. My idea was a social media platform that would help students like myself, find career mentors. It made me a finalist for Essence Magazine’s “Internet Ideas that Make Your Business Really Click.” I didn’t have the infrastructure at the time to fully develop the idea and business after the competition, but it let me know my ideas did capture people’s attention. I work with youth, and I still see the need for this. And you never know, I may return to it in the near future because I have the tools now.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Prairie View A&M University where I enjoyed my career in media production, creating original content for Prairie View A&M University’s television station and hosting my show, “Hill Views.” This experience led me to become a weekly radio personality on 91.3 FM’s current events show and intern at Radio-One Houston for two summers. After graduating, I explored various creative roles as a stylist and makeup artist in the fashion and beauty industries, while also collaborating on local short films and small-budget projects. Eventually, I transitioned to teaching, the family business, where I enjoyed giving back and working with high school students in English, Journalism, and Speech. I later focused on independent projects that emphasize authentic storytelling, writing, producing, and directing works like “Tangled Web of True Love Tales”. I have written and published 2 fiction and 2 nonfiction books that have opened doors. After I moved from Houston to Hollywood, my film, “365 Days in LA” became an award winning film seen all over the world. I furthered my education with a Master of Fine Arts in Screenwriting from Houston Baptist University. I recently wrote, produced, and directed a faith- based project I am excited about titled, “How Do You Hear God”. It will premiere soon! It features 14 different believers from different walks of life who are taking a moment to share their own unique way God speaks to them, and how it’s transformed them as people.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am just one person; that has made it difficult. It’s a challenge wearing so many different hats and having my hands in so many different parts of the company. I would like to expand and grow and be able to bring on an assistant and also a full-time and full service dream team so I can delegate and focus on one aspect of the business. I’m currently working on that because that would allow my current business to keep evolving and thriving at the rate that I’m seeing it want to. I’m just trying to catch up with it all and I wish I could serve more people, but it is only one me, so instead, I’ve had to operate in a seasonal way and take on less clients because there’s a balance of what I’m putting out as an artist and what I’m taking on as a business woman within our unique media arts company.
Being independent is also a challenge, but it is definitely my top priority. I know big machines like Big Five publishing companies have a team of teams. I know big studios, and production companies have a wealth of crew and bigger Hollywood budgets, but I feel that God has put me on a mission to show other Indies that they can be the little engines that can in both these industries; you can produce great movies that move people and you can publish great books that reach audiences all within smaller imprints and independent entertainment companies. There is a need for us, especially in these times. Although there are many obstacles, you have more freedom to tell authentic stories and you have the ability to keep them pure and keep their integrity with less red tape, politics, and bureaucracy that comes with the Big machines. There is a space for you as an indie and it can be very rewarding work – so I just have to press on and know that help is always there when I need it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My company, Eclectically You Experience, is a one-of-a-kind media arts company that specializes in book publishing, film production, and courses that teach other Indies how to do just that: writing and publish their own books and independently film their own films. Online courses will be available soon so I can reach more people! Our EYE newsletter allows all of our audiences to be up-to-date with our latest books, films or services and those who are interested can sign up on the company’s website, www.eclecticallyyou.com.
