Rising Stars: Meet Mengru Zhou of Seattle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mengru Zhou.

Hi Mengru, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Mengru Zhou, and I’m a visual artist. My practice is rooted in painting, often exploring themes of identity, memory, and cultural transition. Trained in both China and the U.S., I’m constantly navigating between traditions and contemporary expressions, East and West.

In 2024, I founded TEAOC.ART—a platform dedicated to supporting Chinese artists and bridging their work with global audiences. It started from my own journey of seeking visibility as an artist abroad, and has grown into a space where community, culture, and creativity meet.

Art has always been the language through which I make sense of the world—and with both my personal work and TEAOC.ART, I hope to keep building meaningful connections across borders.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. Being an artist in a new country, speaking a second language, trying to figure out where I fit—it’s a lot. There were moments when I felt really lost, unsure if my work would ever connect with people outside of my own culture.

Starting TEAOC.ART was actually a response to that feeling. I knew I wasn’t the only one. A lot of amazing Chinese artists don’t get the exposure they deserve, simply because there isn’t enough support or visibility for them internationally. Building something from scratch while still trying to grow as an artist myself—it’s been overwhelming at times. Juggling both roles isn’t easy.

But all of that pushed me to grow. I’ve learned to be patient with myself, and to keep showing up—even when it’s hard.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a visual artist, and my work is all about exploring themes like identity, memory, and the way we shift between cultures. I mainly work with oil paints and mixed media, and I love blending traditional techniques with more modern ones. I’m always thinking about how we change when we move to a new place, how our backgrounds shape us, and how those stories shift over time.

What I’m most proud of is the way my work has grown and the connections I’ve made through it. I’m proud that my art speaks to both my personal experiences and universal themes. I also love how my style has evolved. I’m always pushing myself to try new things.

What sets me apart? Honestly, I think it’s the mix of traditional Chinese techniques with a more contemporary approach. And beyond just my own work, I’m super proud of TEAOC.ART. It’s not just about me—it’s about helping other Chinese artists get the exposure and opportunities they deserve on a global stage.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think the most important thing for me has been resilience—just not giving up, even when things aren’t going as planned. There have been a lot of moments where I could have walked away or felt defeated, but something keeps me going. It’s a mix of passion, curiosity, and the belief that even setbacks are part of the journey. I’m constantly learning from every experience, and that willingness to keep going, even when it’s hard, has been the biggest factor in getting to where I am today.
