Rising Stars: Meet Melanie Hatzenbühler of East Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Hatzenbühler

Melanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
If I hadn’t been fortunate enough to be raised in a supportive household, I probably would have ended up as a doctor or a teacher. Although I have always been very creative and spent my entire childhood playing the piano, dancing, or painting, I never considered using these skills in my future occupation. Ironically, it was my mom who encouraged me to pursue acting as a career.

After watching my 17-year-old self perform in the dance show “Neverland” she came up to me, grinning from ear to ear. “Melaschka!” she announced proudly (that’s how the Russian side of my family lovingly calls me). “Oh, you simply have to become an actress! You were glowing onstage.” That day I abandoned my plans to apply to med school and started researching this extraordinary profession.

Growing up in a small town in Germany, however, made the idea of pursuing acting seem more like a delusional dream than a realistic career choice. It wasn’t until three years later that I made the life-changing decision to move to the U.S. and study theater in a full-time acting program in Los Angeles.
Fast forward to July 2024. I have successfully graduated from the LACC Theatre Academy, where I had the privilege of working with incredible directors such as José Luis Valenzuela, Ramiro Segovia, Roger Castellano, and Louie Piday.

At the beginning of this year, I won my first acting award at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival of Region 8 and had the honor of being flown out to D.C. as one of the national finalists. This recognition was a significant milestone in my career and further fueled my passion for acting.

After finishing school, I started auditioning for a wide range of projects, and now I am happy to be working on a regular basis. I recently wrapped my first leading role in a Russian-American pilot called “Blin,” directed by Lada Egorova. Additionally, I frequently find myself on set for “vertical” productions, a format that has been increasingly popular in recent months. You can see me on ReelShorts in “Kiss Me One Last Time” and several upcoming, unreleased shows set to premiere in the next few months.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For me the road has certainly been bumpy, and like many in the industry, I’ve experienced my fair share of struggles. Transitioning from a small town in Germany to the vibrant and competitive world of Hollywood was daunting. Adapting to a new culture, establishing a network, and finding my footing in such a dynamic environment demanded immense perseverance and flexibility.

As an immigrant, I also encountered additional hurdles. From intensive work on accent reduction, to navigating complex contracts and dealing with paperwork specific to international employees, these challenges added further complexity to an already demanding industry.
And of course, I faced rejection and self-doubt—common experiences that many go through. Each audition that didn’t go as hoped and every missed role tested my determination. Although these setbacks were, and still are, difficult, they were pivotal in strengthening my resilience and enhancing my craft.

Despite these obstacles, each one has served as a valuable lesson. They have underscored the importance of tenacity, flexibility, and maintaining a positive outlook. Ultimately, these experiences have shaped me into a more committed and skilled actress, and I am grateful for the growth they have fostered.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a trilingual actress, fluent in German, Russian, and English, which has given me a unique perspective and ability to connect with a diverse range of people. I’m always up for a new linguistic challenge and my next goals are to become conversational in French, Spanish, and ASL.

In addition to my linguistic skills, I have a deep passion for music. I play the piano, have basic skills in both violin and guitar, and enjoy singing. Music has always been a significant part of my life, and I find that it helps me express myself creatively and connect with others on a different level. On top of that, I love to dance, paint and draw, really anything that lets me express my creativity.

Personality-wise, I’m known for being very outgoing. I bring a lot of energy and fun to the table, but I also know when to switch to professional mode and get things done. People know they can count on me and often appreciate my ability to notice the small details and my willingness to help whenever needed.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to bridge cultures and communities through both language and music. This combination not only enhances my communication skills but also enriches my interactions, whether they are professional or personal.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
While I strive for excellence in everything I do, I’ve come to realize that there’s no such thing as perfection in acting—or in life, for that matter. The most human and vulnerable moments often come from our imperfections, and embracing those moments has been a big part of my journey. It’s a continuous process of learning to accept that it’s okay to be imperfect because that’s what makes us relatable and real.

An intriguing aspect of my life that might surprise some is my love for spontaneous solo travel and my enjoyment of solitary moments. Given that my career often involves being surrounded by large groups and engaging in constant social interactions, I find these quiet periods of solitude particularly refreshing and valuable. I use that time to dive into books, explore art, listen to music, or play the piano. These moments provide me with a much-needed balance and help me recharge.
