Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekinna Knight
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi!! I’m Mekinna, and I am a Los Angeles-based artist with focuses in dance, choreography, cinematography, writing/directing, and acting. Originally from Dallas, TX, I attended Booker T. Washington HS for the Visual and Performing Arts where I studied different Modern and Ballet techniques, Partnering, Contemporary, Street Styles, Jazz, African Diaspora’s, B-Girl, and Dance on Film. Without being dramatic, truly art chose me from birth, I did not choose it. I am a vessel in which stories get told, and the life I live invites all who want to listen to that story, or help me tell it. I am constantly fueled by the existence of the world around me, and everything that happens within it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No roads are smooth. Mine definitely wasn’t the most bumpy- it’s been more of a 13,000 pronged fork in the road. I feel isolated opposing a lot of my generation for the fact that I had a pretty non-traumatic childhood all around, and I always feel I had the support and encouragement to follow my dreams and pursue whatever crazy ideas I have. If there is any adversity it usually comes from myself, which is always an intriguing experience that teaches me so much.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I want every human I encounter to feel held. I want to hold up a mirror to this community to acknowledge things that every single one of us is going through, and to talk about it. I want people to live in the moment and to see that the more we try to control a certain outcome, the lesser and longer it takes to get to the outcome we need. I want to inspire people to make art. Throughout my life, I will explore the rare opportunity to live a life entirely my own. As a young artist, it’s still feeling like a far away dream to present my own work all over the world, but with a un-relinquishing optimism for opportunity, everything I do feels a very astonishing step closer to achieving the dream. I will continue to practice professionalism, creativity, and spontaneity with the utmost focus and respect towards all of the beautiful humans who make this possible.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The most real answer is simply by existing. I think being in relationship with the people around you is the number one, and only necessary, thing to being seen, respected, and shared. I feel in a state of all over the place currently with a very colorful path ahead of me, but I welcome it all as I know the correct path will show itself to me. My favorite projects i’ve ever worked on are those where I and the person I connected with are equally inspired by each other and the work we are creating.
