Today we’d like to introduce you to Matty Fay.
Hi Matty, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in the dreamy Rocky Mountains of Colorado, I was raised by a family of artists, most importantly, my grandmother who was a prolific painter, and my grandfather and father as master woodcarvers. From their creativity, I was inspired at a young age of 5 to begin drawing and painting. As of today, my style can be described as one foot in reality and one in a dimension of vibrancy and magic.
My first leap into the professional world was a publication at age 15 when I was chosen to illustrate a page of a coloring book for Star Wars Attack of the Clones. This accomplishment merged my enthusiasm for art and film together and inspired me to move to Los Angeles. Since then, Los Angeles has turned out to be massively instrumental to my career as it is a haven for creatives and a hub for global influences. The culture has driven me to push myself and consistently explore new ideas and mediums.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a native to Los Angeles for over ten years, life had its natural experiences and lessons. My main inhibitor for many years was feeling stuck in a loop of doubt just trying to pay bills at many jobs that stressed me out and not having much time for artwork. The time seemed like it would never end with piles of blank and unfinished canvases shoved into my closet, losing sight of any path for my art to manifest into something bigger. I still worked on art in the little time I had, but the desire for more began to simmer. In the U.S., we are conditioned to believe we have to work hard and make above a certain wage so we can buy all of the things that are supposed to make us happy. The truth is, my creativity was dying.
This past year, I found myself surrounded by my true loved ones who reminded me that I don’t have to walk my path alone. When the pandemic hit, I had the opportunity to revisit my life with some inspiration from mentors and make a strong decision to focus on what really ignites me, my artwork. I began revisiting my artworks, launched two auctions selling more than ever, re-built my website with new products, and then great opportunities began to arise in what seemed like magic. I realized when I paid attention to my feelings and gave my soul the joy of creativity it longed for, more joyful experiences kept showing itself around the corner.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My artistry is specific to painting and drawing. I work with many mediums exploring themes of nature, portraits, fantasy, and horror, in oils and acrylics. My work is broad, but you could say when observing, all portray jewel tones and add the fantasy or magic factor, for example, to a normal butterfly or a lake scenery in Colorado. I’d say if you want me to paint a statue, I’d make it move.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always inspired to look for opportunities to collaborate, whether it’s working with musicians for album artwork or painting in tandem with another artist. No matter how much experience an artist has, I believe collaborating massages flexibility that allows me to feel liberated when I’m creating alone. If you aren’t an artist looking to collaborate and want to connect through supporting my journey, sponsoring my art in any way is always welcome. A commission or a website purchase are easy beginnings to serve my artwork. I have many different items available on my website in all price points from masks to fine art prints and to original pieces. Another great way help is to simply give me a follow or a like on social media which is, I think, one of the biggest ways to support an artist as a viewer!
