Rising Stars: Meet Mai Liao of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mai Liao

Hi Mai, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my wine journey in 2013, leaving a career in marketing to pursue my passion full-time. I found myself balancing study sessions with lively shifts at a local wine shop, where I soaked in knowledge and firsthand experience with wine and its community. By 2015, I felt ready to take the plunge and founded Sip L.A., focusing on wine classes and tastings to share my expertise.

With a growing client base, I expanded Sip L.A. into wine brokerage, helping connect people with wines they loved. My journey continued as I took on a role as a sommelier at a French restaurant, where I refined my palate and deepened my understanding of French wines. After the pandemic, I felt a renewed vision for Sip L.A. and decided to open a wine bar, creating a space for wine lovers to gather, learn, and enjoy thoughtfully curated selections.

Through Sip L.A., I bring people together over wine, connecting my past with my passion and constantly evolving the brand.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Along the way, I’ve faced my share of challenges—from building a client base and establishing Sip L.A.’s reputation to balancing the demands of wine studies, events, and early business hurdles. Securing funding has also been a challenge, as I navigated both the competitive market and the steep learning curve of the industry. Every step has had its struggles.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Sip L.A., we specialize in making wine drinking an accessible, stylish, and fun experience. Our focus is on creating an environment where people can enjoy wine without feeling intimidated, blending education with entertainment so that wine becomes not just a drink but a lifestyle. We’re known for our unique approach to wine events, tastings, and classes that bring a fresh perspective to the wine scene.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for finding a mentor or building a network is to focus on genuine relationships and seek out people who share your passion. In my experience, it helps to be proactive in attending industry events, joining wine communities, or taking classes, as these spaces often connect you with like-minded individuals. Don’t hesitate to reach out and ask questions, even if it’s just for advice—many people are more willing to share their knowledge than we think.

What’s worked well for me has been to stay open and show appreciation for others’ expertise. By building authentic connections, I’ve not only found mentors but also built a network of peers who offer support, inspiration, and collaboration. Staying curious and involved in the community has been invaluable.
