Rising Stars: Meet Lorin Hook of Koreatown, Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorin Hook

Hi Lorin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had always had an interest in art but didn’t know how to make a living doing what I love. But one day I was on instagram and I saw some nail art videos and thought to myself “I bet I could do this”. After that I signed myself up to get my license and the rest is history!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to becoming a nail artist was definitely bumpy. I got my license right before the covid lockdown so finding a salon hiring at the time was challenging. I also had to teach myself how to promote my business and make content. There are constant learning curves but that’s what makes it fun and interesting!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am now a licensed nail technician going on 6 years of being in practice and I specialize in Gel-X, nail art, nail education, and press on nails. I’m most known on social media for my tutorials and complex nail art. I strive to share information and tips & tricks that I wish I would have had earlier in my journey as a nail artist. At this point in my career I’m most proud of the community that I’m building and of course my ever-evolving nail art skills. I aim to keep stepping out of my comfort zone with new techniques and new designs to keep up with the latest trends, which is something that isn’t so common in the traditional salon world.

What matters most to you? Why?
The most important aspect of my job and the thing that keeps me motivated to continue, is my clients and people that learn from me. I do my best to make sure they have a great experience and show that I about them and their nails. Everything from providing a cozy environment to making sure their nails stay healthy. I value everyone that gives me the opportunity to design their nails and everyone that asks for my opinions/techniques. They are the reason I am able to continue to do the work I love.
