Rising Stars: Meet Lori Dumas-Mays

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Dumas-Mays.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Freelance Black artists residing in southern California specializing in piquing the interests of those who explore adult erotica. Self-taught and self-motivated I started drawing at a tender age of eight. Refining my skills and constantly uncovering my passion through life experiences I want to produce breath-taking and energy-filled displays of affection and freedom. Creating short tantalizing stories with vivid illustrations in pencil sketches or color. I’ve done several ArtShow in multiple states and I look forward to more creative opportunities in the future.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a tough road through my creative journey with the doubts of people thinking I would be a struggling artist and go nowhere because of my erotic perspective. Being rejected from certain venues because I lacked a certain status or just because my artwork is considered explicit. It took a while to find my voice in the art world but I remained confident in the work I create. It’s a journey of snippets to a story not written yet. I stayed consistent with my artwork because it is my passion. I breathe Art. Art makes me happy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started of sketching, I’m very detail oriented when I sketch with pencils on paper. I like using charcoal and pastels, something about using my fingers to connect with the colors and the medium while creating my thoughts. I started painting a few years ago and I love every bit of it. There’s so much more I want to explore like sculpting. I like playing around with brushes and tangible items to add to my paintings for a 3-D effect. I also create custom adult coloring books to help with anxiety and stress. Through my work, I want people to feel free and empowered to be themselves.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned to stay true to myself and to be open to all creative things and most of all to stay consistent.
