Rising Stars: Meet Lawless of SGV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawless

Hi LAWLESS, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey and passion for music started in 2005 when my mom gave me a portable CD player. For years I carried it around with me everywhere, buying and listening to different albums with it. This inspired me and led me to fall in love with music. Around 5th grade is when I started writing my own lyrics. Later on in my high school years I would join garage bands after school. I spent most of my time after class trying to learn different instruments including bass guitar. This is the reason I started talking to my close friend & collaborator Restinpeace. Since then, we have motivated ourselves and each other to pursue our own music, despite having no studio access.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started making music, I had no microphone or professional equipment. I had no knowledge of mixing or mastering. Everything I’ve ever done has been a DIY learning experience. The great thing about this, is that you can hear the progress being made with every release and project over the past years. When my first album finally released, the 2020 pandemic had just started. This left me with a slight feeling of hopelessness and defeat. The plans I had for performing would have to wait a few years and most of my peers had walked away from music during this time. The road hasn’t always been smooth, but I’ve never let the challenges get in the way of reaching my goals or fulfilling my visions.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist and designer who makes music. I am aspiring to become and do more, not just in music. I have designed clothes under the name Heartbreak Cult. Since high school I have studied Architecture while also making music under the name LAWLESS (Or “The Lawless One”, also “Lwlss” for short). I’m very proud of every album I have ever made, including the many others that will drop this year. I believe my sound stands out from most artists who are making music today. My influences stem from many different genres of music, not just hip-hop and I believe that’s one thing that sets me apart from others. I would describe my style of music as “grunge rap”, “traprock”, or “garage-trap”.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Trust your intuition and follow God. A lot of things in life didn’t work out for me, including college and career jobs. I believe if I was meant to be somewhere else in life right now, then I would be there. Instead, I am here today sharing my story because it is part of the path I am meant to walk down.
