Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Jenning.
Hi Kelsey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved music and moving my body to the vibrations while embodying the character of the song. I used to dance in the lounge room as a toddler with my dad and this is one of my fondest memories. It wasn’t until about 16 that I started going to hip hop classes and from there performed in a caberet show which led to me following dance and performing as my career.
Dancing led to modeling, small acting roles, rollerskating and some fire twirling! It also took me over to India in 2019 to perform in the Bollywood industry in movies and also cheerleading in the IPl. I’ve performed at big stages like Rod laver arena, Aami Park and Gmhba Stadium in Australia.
I’ve danced for big and small artists such at The Cat Empire, Sofie Tukker, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Tiger Schroff and Mareya and Younique.
I’ve been a part of major sporting events and tours as entertainment or as a model for things like the Grand Prix, Avalon Airshow, Kings of Kombat, Australian Open, Hardcore Promotions series, etc.
I’ve also managed to land one of my photos in Vogue Australia for the label Pearls and Roses recently.
I have just completed two months of dance training at Millenium Dance Complex and in hope to move to LA in the near future to pursue bigger dreams and continue upskilling in my craft.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been struggles. There have been financial struggles as being a freelance dance is never a stable income and I have had to support myself financially for all my courses traveling to train and investment in equipment and costume. It has been quite difficult in that respect. Juggling many jobs and sometimes doing 12-hour days on 3 hrs sleep.
I have also had emotional struggles working on mental health and motivation and dealing with life events before performing. I have had to perform on stage with big smiles directly after breakups, deaths and funerals. These moments have been tough!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a dancer/performer/ model in Melbourne, Australia and have performed around Australia and internationally.
I am most proud of my persistence, resilience and mental. As this has got me further than I thought possible and this is the trend I want to keep pushing. Even when I have doubted myself there has been a little voice that tells me to keep going and that has taken me to some awesome experiences!
I believe I am set apart from others because of my positive attitude and my willingness to try new skills. It has led me to so many different things in my performing career which has also served me – Eg. Bollywood dancing, Brazilian samba, rollerskating, fire twirling and modeling.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a shy kid but was a hard worker in school and still managed to have many good friends. I was quiet but loyal and a hard worker. These traits have followed me throughout life, although I have learnt to have more confidence through performing and be more social and speaking up when I need to. I’ve always loved dancing, moving and music and this still is true.
