Rising Stars: Meet Katie Vonderheide

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Vonderheide.

Hi Katie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been making stuff since I was a little kid. My mom would take me with her everywhere and give me paper and a pen to keep me occupied. Since I was young, I’ve known that making things is all I’ve ever wanted to do. I got my BFA in painting with a minor in Art History. When I moved to LA, shortly after I started a gallery and performance space with my friend, Chris, called Synchronicity Space. It was located in East Hollywood during 2008-2013. In 2017, I decided to go to LA Trade Tech to attend their Sign Graphics program to hone my skills in sign painting. My main objective is to be a skilled craftsperson. I also have a dream to one day open a small amusement park where I can make all the attractions with my talented friends and family.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Every time I’ve had to start over, I’ve had to struggle with figuring it out. Ultimately, I think it’s taught me how to be resourceful and appreciate the abundance within my relationships.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a painter who makes signs, murals, illustrations, design, fabrications, etc. I love to find creative solutions and often in a cost-effective way. That’s one of the reasons I love paint so much. It’s inexpensive, relative to other building materials, and can be so impactful. I’m most proud of the community I’ve created while living in LA. I been working with some clients, who I consider close friends, for over a decade!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I remember being really shy. I loved reading, drawing, and making stuff with my friends. We all loved books. Together, we’d write plays, share and fill sketchbooks, do crafts, and make videos. I still keep in touch with a lot of my childhood friends.
