Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamara Robideau.
Hi Kamara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the woods of upstate NY where I had nothing but time to play outside, listen to music, and learn to play the piano. I graduated high school when I was 16, bought my first guitar and then soon after got an Associate’s degree in jazz guitar. As I was deciding whether or not I wanted to continue on to get a Bachelor’s degree, I discovered the bass guitar, joined the band Aminal and have been obsessed with playing bass in bands ever since. I currently live in Los Angeles where I have been gigging and finishing up my first self-produced solo album titled “Old Dwellers.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d have to say one of the bigger struggles I’ve had so far along the way is keeping my focus on creating this specific life I’ve imagined for myself. I was raised in the woods with family whose goal was to survive on the land and be prepared for any potential catastrophe. Therefore, this life and career I have been working towards is something I’ve imagined up and just had to believe in this whole time though I had no musicians in the family or evidence that it could work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Most people know me as a bass player since I have played bass for many projects over the years – Aminal, Oh Manitou, Gold Koa, and most recently a new band called Mad Bad World. I have also recorded bass on different artists’ songs, co-written songs for Gold Koa, and recently started to produce solo music under the name “Ku.”
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I still have yet to get into podcasts, but I do have a lot of books that help me get through life. Reading has always been one of my favorite escapes. One book I like to re-read every so often is The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp. Some other of my favorite reads are Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, In The Shadow Of Man by Jane Goodall, The Last Hours Of Ancient Sunlight by Thom Hartman, and I am currently reading The Alchemist which is wonderful so far.
