Rising Stars: Meet Juan Ruano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Ruano.

Hi Juan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
When we last spoke here on VoyageLA in 2019, I had just released my debut album and the music industry had yet to face its most challenging period to date. Since then, I’ve had to reevaluate my approach and understanding of what place music has in my life, time and time again. After spending the majority of my time during quarantine opening up Cubase and experimenting with new sounds and mixing techniques, I’m finally at the other end of a chapter of hard work to be anticipating the release of my new single, “Someday.” Initially demoed in November of 2019 in Portland, Oregon, “Someday” seeks to ignite the anxious feeling of a generation with fleeting direction and hyper-awareness of the self.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It would seem that it’s never truly a smooth road when it comes to life and creative work is no exception. I find satisfaction in always knowing I tried my absolute best at whatever I do, so when it comes to recording music, I often find myself being overtly critical of even the slightest detail of a recording. In some ways, I’m not too sure if it’s a trait that completely holds me back. While it does hinder my volume of output and overall ability to stay consistent with becoming a recognizable brand in the industry, if my true goal is to make something I can be certain that I’m proud of, then I think I always come out on top, so to speak.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a self-taught and self-motivated songwriter/producer/mixing engineer, most known for my dreamy, yet aggressively emotional style of psychedelic / indie-rock productions. I’ve been told that I specialize in maintaining a vision for a project. Even through long time periods and copious amounts of work. I’m always able to recall an emotion or feeling that made whatever piece of music I’m working on special in the first place.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Integrity. If I don’t wholeheartedly believe in what I’m doing or feel like I tried my absolute best, I often find that I lose focus and motivation. I know I’ll always be in the world of creative work, so working sustainably for my mind, body, and soul is my top priority.
