Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Mireles.
Hi Josie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved mixed media and creating different forms of imagery. Whether that be photography, painting, collages, videography, etc. the list could go on. I never dreamt that I could turn my love of art into a job that allows me to provide for myself and gives me the freedom to continue pursuing something I love so deeply.
With that being said filming and videography was always one of my favorite things to do. It made me feel inspired, nostalgic, and grateful for the time I spent with friends and family whenever I watched my videos back.
I used to create stop motion videos in Jr. High that got lost in the archives (which is probably a good thing, those videos were extremely cringy). It wasn’t until high school that I started shooting videos of me and my friends on our various road trips that I really fell in love with the process of creating these mini-films that I could look back on forever.
At that point and time, I thought my videos were really good but looking back on them now it is really cool to see how I have grown as an artist and grown into myself.
I feel like my filming and editing style have become much more elevated and I always focus on staying true to myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been the smoothest road but I feel extremely grateful and lucky in the sense that I have my friends and family who are some of the most encouraging people I know. I am also surrounded by such a supportive creative community that pushes me and inspires me daily. Being in the freelance industry can be difficult at times but creating things that inspire people is really rewarding and I am thankful that I can take part in that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think the main thing that sets me apart from others is the fact that I shoot only on film. I have a deep love for film and the process of using film. I love the thrill and surprise of getting the film back after it gets developed. I believe that film is timeless and I love capturing feeling and emotion through different mediums. I love mixed media. I love incorporating things into my video edits and photos that would surprise people and hopefully leave people feeling inspired and full.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that most people don’t know about me is the fact that I’m not the most tech-savvy person. This is funny because most of my job is editing on a computer. As someone who does video/photo as my main job, I don’t even own a digital camera! Like I said earlier, my love for film runs deep (lol).
I have learned a lot over the years and I’m excited to continue to learn more. I hope to one day get my hands on a digital camera but as for right now I’m enjoying creating magic on my old film cameras and I am expectant to see what the near future holds for me.
