Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Knox.
Hi Jasmin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Yes…so right after graduating high school, I went straight to college and started studying Kinesiology; I was an athlete at the time and thought it would make more sense to stay within the sports industry and thought I would have this incredible career in Sports Medicine. Although it sounded nice, I quickly learned after two semesters that it just wasn’t my passion.
As a child, I was always in awe of music, films, television, and just the art of it all. So, I decided to follow my heart and changed my major to Mass Communications and later attended a trade school that was focused on Radio & TV Broadcasting. After graduating, I had applied to many radio stations in different markets, just hoping to get a foot in the door somewhere.
I received a call back from iHeartMedia in Los Angeles, and they informed me they weren’t hiring at the moment, but their fall internship program was still accepting applicants and if I interested in applying for that instead. I was so hungry I said absolutely, and then I enrolled back into college just to so I can apply for the internship.
That internship later turned into a full-time position as a producer for Real 9.23 LA’s night show, monitoring the control boards, handling social media, editing voice tracks, creating show notes, and much more. I also had the pleasure of working at other FM stations in the building, which was 102.7 KIIS FM, ALT 98.7, and KOST 1035.
I’ve always been the type of person who wants to learn everything and expand my skills in every facet that I can. So, in addition to working at iHeartMedia, I was also co-hosting after shows at AfterBuzzTV, worked as a freelance correspondent for The Jasmine Brand, and then later started working as a talent assistant at IAG (formerly APA Talent Agency).
Shortly after the pandemic, I was offered a position as a talent assistant at Entertainment Tonight—which happens to be one of my dream jobs, and here we are. I’ve been with the company for 2.5 years now and have already won two Emmys with this amazing team.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road at all. Listen, if you’ve never had to sleep in the studio due to working late nights and early mornings or had a cup of noodles for breakfast, then you have never worked in radio before, haha.
But in all seriousness, I’ve experienced a few hardships along the way, and I’m sure many can agree one of the biggest challenges is having a work/life balance. There were so many events and holidays with family that I had to miss out on, which is difficult for me because I am big family person.
Also, when you are first breaking into the industry, the pay isn’t really substantial, especially living in Los Angeles.
So that becomes another challenge of navigating how to balance multiple jobs while working towards your dream job and goals. When I think about it now, I’m not sure how I was able to work three jobs at once and manage it all, but God is so good!
Although I’ve experienced some roadblocks, there’s nothing I would change. I am so grateful for tough times because the rewards have been great, but the biggest reward is how the trials shape your character. You become resilient and stronger in faith.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Coordinating Producer at ET and work directly with one of the main co-hosts of our daily show. Sometimes, my day-to-day duties will fluctuate–but typically, I am managing schedules, responding to any pitches that come in for the host, printing note cards for shoots, capturing photos out in the field, and sometimes assisting with shoot reports. Because entertainment is 24/7, I am usually always on call outside of the hours I already work.
I am also on-air part-time on 90.7 WKKL. It’s an Alternative Rock college radio station based in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and I record the show remotely from home, which is pretty cool. I also have a podcast called Be You with Jasmin Knox that focuses on connecting with individuals on a personal level and highlighting their careers. I know you’re probably thinking, when do I sleep, but trust me… I get my sleep took me a while to figure that out, but sleep is a priority for me now.
I think what sets me apart is my eagerness to learn and willingness to go the extra mile. I really think it’s important to gain an understanding of other positions in the workplace and even shadow in different departments, that way you can learn new skills and always be of value. I can create content, produce, host, write, edit, and I’m currently taking some improv classes.
I believe we are never too old to advance our skill sets, so I think that’s what sets me apart because I’m always trying to do more and find out ways to keep progressing.
There are so many things I am proud of, but I would say mostly is winning two Emmys… It’s such a pinch-me moment that I do not take lightly at all. Also, being blessed to wake up every day and enjoy my job–not many people can say they really enjoy their work. I have been very fortunate to work at big award shows like the OSCARS, GRAMMYS, EMMYS, and ESPYS and it never gets old to me.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Wow, it’s so hard to say because this industry is constantly evolving, as we see in real time.
I think one of the biggest shifts will be a lot more usage of Artificial Intelligence in films, TV, and radio because it’s only going to continue to advance over time.
Especially now, since we are witnessing more companies laying off their employees to save money, I wouldn’t be surprised if companies start relying on AI even more so they can cut costs and still make sure basic job requirements are met. Which then could create a more competitive field.
It will be interesting to see where this industry will be in 10 years, but as long as creators stay authentically true to themselves and in their work, then we will all be fine.
