Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila Gimba.
Hi Jamila, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started out as an indie artist, making music part-time while working a 9–5 job in fintech. Soon enough, I wanted to start creating visuals for my music, so I began collaborating frequently with my childhood friend, who’s a director. Together, we worked on a few of my music videos and eventually started creating videos for other artists and eventually brands too! It has been one of the most fun and challenging experiences of my life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I first started out, I had no idea what I was doing. I wanted to be an artist, and I didn’t think I had the skill set or talent to do anything creative beyond that. Early on, I made a lot of mistakes and often convinced myself that I’d never truly understand the film world. When the crew would discuss things like marks, lenses, and lighting on set, I’d be completely lost. But over time, I grew more confident in my work and kept pushing myself to learn more about what it takes to create on that level.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Creative Director with roots in music videos, where I began crafting narratives and developing visual worlds. Over time, I’ve expanded my scope to include film & brands. My aesthetic blends the edgy with the classic — I’m drawn to the power of contrast and find my strength in playing with unexpected juxtapositions.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
