Rising Stars: Meet Jackie Hoehle of Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Hoehle.

Hi Jackie , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I completed my cosmetology studies at El Camino College back in 1993. I immediately started working at a large full service salon In Torrance, where I began an apprenticeship under Darlene Anderson (then Sigworth) I worked under her direction for about 3 years, where I furthered my education through her teachings and taking more classes on product knowledge and techniques. Through growth in my education and clientele I remained working there for 20 years, until the salon was sold. I then continued on and worked at few salons in the south bay. After working in the industry for 27 + years, Covid hit. The irregularities of opening and closing in the beginning of the pandemic brought a devastating hit to my business, and I was forced to retire. So I thought. After 2 years of not working in the beauty industry, I decides to return. And in 2022 I started working again. It has had some challenges as I had to start from scratch, and rebuild my clientele. I am so blessed to work where I do and work alongside some of the most amazing, talented artists in the business. My family and I moved from the South Bay to Orange County two and a half years ago. But, I still make the drive, excitingly 4x a week. I absolutely love what I do, and I love my clients. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Covid 19. During the pandemic, I was forced to close doors and go into early retirement. So I thought, I am back!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Hair artist, I specialize in many things such as haircuts, color, and special occasion styling. I would say of all the hair services I offer, haircuts and color are my favorites. I love transforming looks, and with that bringing out the best looks for my clients. Aside from the art of hair designing, I really enjoy getting to know my clients and their families. Giving them and myself a sense of community together with my colleagues. I love making them feel comfortable, safe and happy when they leave my chair. It’s not just a service, but a relationship.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In the 30 something years I have been in this business, I have taken many risks. I like to call them challenges. We aren’t born knowing everything, so sometimes you have to take what I like to call, steps of faith. I think there is where you grow, as a person and as a professional. In the beginning of my journey as a hair artist some of the risks I took involved decisions such as going from being an employee to a self employed/renters stylist. Changing salons, and in my case returning to the work force after the pandemic. Having the courage to start from scratch. Especially, when you are not in your 20s anymore, lol. But, what is the alternative? I don’t believe that you ever stop growing, there is always potential for growth in everything. There just has to be a will to do it, and face what ever challenges come your way with courage and tenacity.
