Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Johnson
Gregory, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a filmmaker who grew up in Southern Mississippi. I always loved to create short stories on my mom’s camcorder with plush toys and figurines at a young age. Also, as someone who grew up in the Digital Age, I found myself in the rabbit hole of internet horror. My love for horror films grew over time as they’re not just jumpscares and viscera, but also social and political commentary. I want my art to disturb the comfortable while also shining a light on the Black experience in America and otherworldly situations.
If it wasn’t for the pandemic and me binge-watching BTS footage of movies in solitude, I don’t think I would’ve found myself gravitating towards filmmaking. I see myself as a newcomer to the love of cinema and it’s a journey I’m blessed to be a part of. The more films I study or get recommended, the easier I can start to develop a signature style for my work.
I moved to Los Angeles back in 2023 to pursue my career of being a director/writer. I attend the New York Film Academy based in LA and I will obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking at the end of the year. I jump towards any opportunity that involves strengthening my craft and connecting with others who match the same passion. My work ethic and need to create are always presented the strongest in the realms of pre-production, writing, and lighting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe I’ve been on a linear path so far. There have been many hiccups on the road, of course. Losing footage for a short film I finished (and reshooting it) has probably been my biggest hassle thus far in my career. Filmmaking is not the easiest job in the world but the fun part is coming up with solutions. Every second counts.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to think of myself as a multifaceted artist. I’m invested in anything that involves creating. Photography has been one of my strong suits over the years. As I have grown as a filmmaker over the last year, I found a love for gaffing, grip/electric, and sound. I prefer to be related to anything dealing with lights or moving equipment.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I love to take risks regarding my career and lifestyle. I took a major one recently when trying to film a commercial and racing against time to get my permit. It didn’t happen but I took this as a lesson to strengthen my time management and organization. Filmmaking is all about safety yet risk-taking is the second thing on my mind. I am willing to do anything to get a shot as long as it’s fun for my crew. In life, I tend to keep myself in a bubble unless I’m with people I’m comfortable with.
