Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenalyn Ann .
Hi Glenalyn Ann, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My dad used to do photography as a hobby, then my older sister, then myself. So I guess you can say I was influenced. However, I remember when I got my ever first camera which was a Canon T5i after begging my parents for a whole year so I could start making YouTube videos, it felt like a light bulb lit and I was producing vlogs for me and my friends to watch every week. Soon enough I became the “YouTuber” or the “Girl with the Camera” and was quite frankly everyone’s choice when they wanted photos + videos for a club. I later joined my middle school’s journalism class where I learned how to write articles, etc. Then high school came around and I honestly didn’t know what to do because my heart was telling me to go into the creative field and my brain was telling me it wasn’t logical. At this point, I was doing a little less photography and videography since my main focus was school, so it felt like I was losing my spark. However, in my junior year of High School, I decided to take a Film Production class since I had time in my schedule and fell back in love with the art of visual storytelling. And then right at the peak of me starting to relearn my love for photography and videography, the pandemic hit and I couldn’t film or take pictures of anyone, which was when I turned to social media. At the time, TikTok was on the rise so I honed in on that! I was producing videos, understanding the algorithm, and honestly started to become a self-taught social media manager/content creator, all while photography and videography were still in the back of my mind. Soon it was time for college and I decided to go to community college for two years and then transfer so I can work on building experience since I knew for certain I wanted to do something with visual arts. So I started working with clients like Ducati Newport Beach where I was able to learn and implement my love for photography, videography, and social media! By the time it was time to transfer, I knew I wanted to become a creative but knowing what industry was the question. I took a while to figure out how to get where I am. I’m still learning and trying to find a good “work-life” balance with it all but I am proud to say that with my 5+ years of experience, combined with a self-motivated approach, I have attracted over 25k+ followers across Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. I’ve also very accomplished in a wide range of content creation, including narrative and documentary filmmaking, concert photography and videography, video editing, street-, portrait-, and automotive photography, and have worked for people and artists like IU, BM, Juju B. Goode, The Tulips, D’Festa LA, etc.. My adaptability to work with different types of clients and proficiency in areas such as social media management and graphic design have also allowed me to constantly evolve and improve my craft.
Even though I would call myself a jack of all trades, I would love to become a creative director in the entertainment industry, especially with music artists, working on producing content to help promote and create personal brands. But until then, I’ll stay a sponge and absorb all I can!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not, there have been times when I doubted myself. Since I work in social media, a lot of my work is based on people liking it and when I used to see my analytics to be really low, I used to think that I wasn’t cut out for it. I would also say I get really invested in projects which has been terrible for my personal life and hope I can get to a point where I make sure to separate my personal and work life since I believe taking care of yourself is very important.
Not only that but since I’m, for the most part, self-made, I was always doubting my skills as a creative since there are so many people who are better than me.
I also am not the richest person so I struggled a bit to get equipment that could keep up with my competition.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SPECIALITIES: VERTICAL VIDEO CREATION, SHORT- + LONG-FORM CONTENT (RECAPS, INTERVIEWS, REACTIONS, ETC.), CONCERT MEDIA (PHOTO+VIDEO), DANCE VIDEOS
I would say I’m most known for my concert media (photos and videos) and dance videos. And as for “most proud of” I would say it would be me working with K-Pop Artist, IU during her HEREH Tour as a Videographer for her LA Stop.
I guess I don’t really compare myself to others but a lot of people do say they enjoy not only the quality of the content produce but the atmosphere I bring when I do film since I try to make my clients as comfortable as possible! Also I have really fast turnaround times.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I would say my middle journalism teacher, Mrs. Hadden, and High School Film Teacher, Mr. Randeen, both helped me pursue my career since they actually had fate in me that I had the potential. It should be noted I was a smart kid so a lot of other teachers were telling me I was “wasting my talents” when I could go into STEM.
My Parents, of course, as AAPI there is a stereotype that you can’t be creative but my parents never pushed that onto myself or my sisters and allowed us to pursue whatever endeavors we wanted.
