Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Robert Puff.
Hi Dr. Robert , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My undergraduate years were marked by a pivotal internal debate: the structured world of physics versus the complexities of the mind in psychology. My path was decisively rerouted by a summer of intense work, followed by an equally intense three-month solo cycling trip across Europe. On that budget journey, staying in hostels and living lean, I discovered something crucial: a work-life balance and quality of life that seemed profoundly different from the one I knew back home. This realization prompted a slow, powerful conviction: I needed a life of autonomy and service. I decided that becoming a clinical psychologist—running my own practice and dedicating myself to helping others—was the best fit for my soul.
The moment I completed my doctorate, postdoctoral residency, and earned my California license, that passion exploded into action. Rather than simply settling into a practice, I poured my energy into outreach. I sought out media interviews to address unfolding crises, began writing books, and eventually launched both a widely read blog for Psychology Today and my Happiness Podcast. This multimedia platform has been a decade-long endeavor, one I continue with the same initial drive and commitment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For any endeavor that truly aligns with one’s purpose, there are almost always challenges and obstacles along the way—but I came to recognize these as simply part of the journey. This mindset was rooted in a powerful, singular goal: if I could just help one person improve their life, it would be worth it. My passion for service remains the single constant driving my work.
This dedication means the audience size is irrelevant. I recall giving a media interview to an audience of over three million listeners one week, and the next, doing one where I’m fairly certain the host and I were the only people present. The scope and numbers truly do not matter. The fundamental drive is simply the opportunity to connect and help.
This deep-seated commitment was profoundly influenced by the example set by my parents. After my father experienced significant career setbacks, they became actively and personally involved in helping the homeless. Witnessing their passion for making other people’s lives better, despite their own circumstances, undoubtedly shaped my own conviction and provided the foundational blueprint for my work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The greatest reward of my career is an entirely internal one: the ability to live my own life well. It is a reward unrelated to professional successes, stemming instead from a consistent practice of maintaining an open and childlike heart.
I view life as a truly beautiful and grateful adventure, and I am profoundly thankful for the people and experiences that continue to shape me. This ongoing journey has kept my heart kind and gentle, which is the most valuable outcome of all.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The most important practice that has sustained both my career and my personal life is the intentional pursuit of silence and deep listening. This isn’t a casual habit, but a core discipline. I have meditated twice daily for over three decades, regularly commit to private retreats, and constantly strive to keep my heart open and present throughout the day.
When I dedicate myself to these practices, I consistently find that the Universe/God gently and unmistakably points me toward the direction my soul needs to evolve. My job, then, is simple: to heed that guidance and follow it. This commitment to internal listening is the anchor for every external step I take.
