Rising Stars: Meet Christopher Jewell Valentìn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Jewell Valentìn.

Hi Christopher Jewell, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a military kid! Both parents were Marines, They were both pretty busy, so whenever we would get together to watch movies and television, it was our bonding time. The good times we had watching them, quoting them, and laughing at them definitely made it easy when trying to decide something I wanted to do. That combined with all of the experiences being a military kid had to offer, in terms of the parts of the world you get to see and the people you meet really gravitated me toward all forms of art. In hope that I could maybe help more families feel that same bond by watching things I can do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In no way would I say any part of where I’m at/ want to go is/was easy. I think the hardest part for me personally is the internal struggle coupled with life deciding to…. Life. Being in the funny business is tough. Not to sound super LA, But “what is funny??” It can lead to a lot of ups and downs emotionally trying to figure out the answer in auditions, when writing, and when performing. Also, it takes a toll pulling from real experiences to create authentic art, which is definitely what makes it worth it while exhausting. When I did Rent recently as Mark Cohen, I remember given how heavy the show was, it kind of caused me to fall into my deepest and darkest thoughts, it was almost therapeutic 😬.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an actor, director, and writer. I have done a lot of work in theater as well as some Indy film work. I would definitely say I’m most proud of when I took a leap of faith and directed and choreographed “legally blonde” and earned a nomination as well as one for performing with “Rent”, both were great feelings, I will say specifically with Rent it felt great because I would say in ways I just was being myself: cooky, energetic, and emotional. To have a validation with it felt great. I do think I’m a different layer of weird and quirk, I have a lot I want to say about the world and I think my background of having seen several different parts of the world while being surrounded by some of the most diverse opinions and people the world has to offer helps give me an open mind, which I feel is necessary in creating good art.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Hmmm… I would say keep on the lookout for my bi-racial face! Also, I know it sounds dumb, but be kind.
