Rising Stars: Meet Bruce Puyu Wang of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bruce Puyu Wang.

Bruce Puyu, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a director, cinematographer. I first entered the film industry in 2016, right at a time when the film and television world was on the rise. Riding that wave, I took my first steps into the field. Later on, I went to New York to pursue a bachelor’s degree in film, where I spent years learning and shooting constantly — a time of rapid growth for me.

Over the next couple of years, I began working on a variety of narrative shorts, commercials, and music videos — keeping myself afloat while staying true to my creative drive. I eventually enrolled at AFI for graduate school, hoping to further hone my craft. After two unforgettable years, I graduated last year — and that brings me to where I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, this hasn’t been an easy path — but then again, what in life ever is? I’ve always held high standards for my work, which drives me to keep pushing my limits and exploring new kinds of stories. That also means I need to connect with different people to find new opportunities. It’s a process that involves a bit of luck, but also a lot of persistence and effort.

Then there’s the constant balancing act between art and commerce — something I’m still learning to navigate. For example, when working with major clients like Warner Music, Prada, or Modern Sky, I have to carefully consider their needs while also staying true to my own creative vision. Finding the harmony between the two is an art in itself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a cinematographer, getting to shoot different stories in different places is something I find deeply rewarding. Each project gives me a chance not only to experience the local culture, but also to dive into the heart of the story and understand the context behind it. That kind of research is always an exciting part of the journey.

And of course, there’s a special kind of pride and fulfillment that comes with seeing my work on the big screen. Some of my recent films have been selected by festivals like Slamdance, the Florida Film Festival, and the Palm Springs Film Festival — and even received a few awards. Being in those rooms, watching the audience respond to my work, is always a proud and emotional moment. More recently, I was thrilled to learn that my thesis film from AFI was named a semifinalist for the 2025 Student Academy Awards. I truly hope I’ll get the chance to see it screened there.

Outside of film, I’m also a musician. I used to play in a band, and now I continue to write and produce as an independent artist. I believe music and film are deeply connected — the movement of a melody and the motion of a camera often speak the same emotional language. It’s something I feel confident calling one of my strengths.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
It’s important to attend film festivals and industry events whenever possible, and to actively connect with others in the field. Applying to programs related to your craft can also open new doors. For instance, I met one of the most important mentors in my life, Jong Lin — the Director of Photography of Ang Lee’s early trilogy — at an event back in 2018. I learned so much from him. Later on, through a director I had worked with, I was introduced to Phedon Papamichael, who also offered me valuable advice.

The key is not to be afraid — show up, engage, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. Of course, I’m still figuring things out myself, and the journey continues.
