Rising Stars: Meet Bettys Mustache

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bettys Mustache. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The band was formed in August 2008 by cousins Martin (guitarist) and Jonathan (drums) as mainly a tribute to their parents whom they lost the year prior. Their parents were twins, Martin’s father Ramon and Jonathan’s mother Gina. They were such strong pillars of our family and a very big inspiration for our music. The band name is actually a homage to them, Betty’s Mustache, with Gina always loving Betty Boop and Ramon having his bold signature mustache. They grew up as a folklorico dance duo whom had a natural love for entertaining and being the life of the party. Unfortunately, they passed away the same year, 2007, due to unrelated circumstances.

As a way of coping with the loss, Martin and Jonathan made it a point to get together and play music. The band helped in creating a stronger bond within our family. It gave us a chance to spend time around each other and also evolve as musicians. Initially, we loved to cover random artists and songs. Slowly the band grew, with the addition of Alex (percussion), the band’s style steered in the direction that we play today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’ve been faced with many obstacles within the band and in our personal life. From dealing with clients that have not paid us for gigs. Or having our windows broken into at our weekly show residency at Las Perlas DTLA.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We love to capitalize on the physical expression that’s created by dancing. It’s so rewarding to see that we make that happen with a diverse crowd. That’s part of the reason when we do covers like bee gees, to even drake and make them cumbia it appeals and gets an amazing respond from the crowds

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Instagram has been a great platform for us. We all have a wide range of likings when it comes to podcasts and books but it’s roughly like comedy, spiritual, and very musical-based books and podcasts.

Pricing:

  • Band performance $400 an hour with a 2 hour minimum
