Rising Stars: Meet Anson Lam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anson Lam.

Hi Anson, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Hawaii and discovered photography at a young age. Over the years, I have experimented with many types of styles and took my passion into freelance work. I had the opportunity to shoot weddings, events and even contracted by corporations like United Airlines. I had a great time but it quickly became unpleasantly stressful. To prevent myself from losing my passion for photography, I took my camera on my hikes, travels, and even into the water. Long story short, I fell I love with surf photography, which led to a lot of opportunities to work with casual to pro surfers. But then Covid came along and ruined the fun. During the pandemic, nothing much was going on which gave me a lot of time to rethink and figure out my next steps in life, so I decided to pack my things and move to Los Angeles. It was definitely quite the struggle moving in the middle of the pandemic but was worth it in the end. I continued my nature photography as a hobby until I felt ready to get back into freelance work. Fast forward to today, I rebranded myself and now shoot fully on film. I began to work on personal projects, released a magazine, and dove into editorial work which I had the pleasure of working with models and music artists.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m a true believer of the phrase “anything that’s worth it never comes easy”. I had my fair share of struggles in the past and the present. Moving to a new state was one of them, it was hard to re-establish yourself in a new city. But I found my people and made connections through the Venice Photo Club. Although there is still a lot of work to do and more struggles along the way, I couldn’t be more happy. I’ve found great people who share the same passion and grind and who are willing to help each other out.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Like other artists, I find inspiration from others. My ideas are inspired by photographer, Tyler Shields and my composition is inspired by the painter, Edward Hopper and from movie productions.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
