Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie De Bruyn
Annie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my journey in interior design, which eventually led me to the world of graphic design—a field that resonated with me more deeply. After going back to school, I landed my first design job at my university, creating posters for campus events. My career took off when I joined ColourPop, a growing cosmetic startup, where I thrived creatively for five years.
However, I reached a point where my work no longer felt impactful, prompting me to seek a company with values more aligned with mine. Despite finding such a place, I still felt unfulfilled and destined for something greater. Since 2021, I’ve delved deeply into spirituality and self-awareness, which intensified my yearning for a more meaningful path.
In February of this year, I was laid off, an event that has propelled me to reflect on my true aspirations. I am now focused on creating a space where creativity, design, healing, wellness and wisdom intersect, sharing my journey and insights with those who are drawn to them. While I’m still shaping this vision, I am confident that I am on the path to making a significant impact. I know I’m going places.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Until now, my journey seemed relatively easy as I followed societal expectations and played it safe. However, being out of a job for six months has been eye-opening, revealing barriers that have held me back from achieving greater impact and potential. This period has given me a perspective I wouldn’t have gained otherwise. Creating a business from scratch, without prior experience but with a strong sense of purpose, has been my greatest challenge so far, but I feel called to do so.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I feel like I’m constantly on a path of self-discovery. From my early days of striving for realistic perfection in art to now exploring work beyond mental limitations into the realm of consciousness, my journey has evolved significantly. I’ve specialized in posters, illustration, digital assets, packaging, and branding, but recently, I’ve found joy in animation, a medium I once resisted in school.
Throughout the years, I’ve never defined myself by a specific style—at least not one that I can see. My ability to experiment with different styles may be my strength. What sets me apart is my uniqueness; how I push limits of interpretation. I compose pieces and animations that don’t necessarily make sense to anyone else. I’m proud to create work that exceeds and challenges conventional boundaries.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
For me, it’s simple: no risk, no reward. I’m currently taking a major risk by pursuing a calling instead of returning to a conventional “secure” job. Beyond design, I’ve taken risks on myself by investing in healing and working through traumas and limiting belief systems through various courses and personal exploration. I believe any investment in bettering yourself is always rewarded.
In addition to design, I’ve taken significant risks in love. I’ve always put myself out there, often being the first to approach a potential partner. These risks have led to some of the most meaningful and beautiful experiences of my life with wonderful, albeit sometimes challenging, individuals. Each relationship has allowed me to uncover more about myself and, ultimately, love myself more deeply.
